YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Now, I never read Mapleshade vengeance, but can I say, I like her.
What I don't like, is that she needs a reason to be a villain.
Why can't the ONLY female villain in warriors just... want to be bad?
I never saw Brokenstar as a victim, but apparently he is? He was abused by his step mom, but in Yellowfang's secret, it didn't show that? (At least from what I recall)
So why does Mapleshade need a horrid backstory?
I like to think that she killed because that's what she thought was right. Not because of what her Kits thought, but because of what she thought. If anything, hallucinated her Kits telling her to kill them due to her grief, and depression.
If her kits DID come and visit her, it was to try to stop her from killing. And one by one, as she killed more cats, the kits gave up on trying to save their mother. That it was no use. That Mapleshade chose this path of her own free will. Because it's what she believed.
I don't think Maple should be viewed as like, a good or confused character.
She made a conscious decision to murder, and she got what she asked for.
Sure, her backstory is bad, but her whole character doesn't need to revolve around that.
Let her be evil for evil sake. She doesn't NEED a reason.
In my mind, she never did.
She let her hate and need to be equal get the best of her, which lead her to kill.
Not in hopes of redemption, or saving her Kits souls.
For her. A personal hit list.
Don't make it out and seem like she did nothing wrong, or that she had a reason to kill. Let her be a killer for fun. Let her kill because she wants too. She doesn't need a sob story to be a good villain.
Don't get me wrong, I like her.
But I wish she was a villain because she wanted to be, and not because she was hurt I guess.
Idk if this is what you wanted Swift, but that's all I thought about XD

She looks so cool and vicious! I full on agree with you with her backstory. When I first heard of her and how nasty she was, I thought she killed for fun. Its not a smart move to have the reader sympathize with her. Sheβs evil. Let her be evil.

Yeah! I mean, I'm all for female villains getting redemption arcs, but let a female be evil just for the sake of being evil. Characters don't need a reason to be evil. If you're going to keep them evil, just let them be evil. No sob story needed lol

Heck yeah.
And I haven't read it, so maybe it is better than I'm making it out to be, but it just didn't click with me
