Description
Daughter of Atlas and Pleione. The Ceryneian Hind, also known as Corace Cerinite, was a legendary animal of Greek mythology, with gold horns and bronze feet, which ran with haunting speed without tiring. She dwelt in Arcadia, hiding in a temple of the Goddess Artemis, whom he was consecrated. In fact, the doe was the "nymph Taigette", which, to escape the persecution of Zeus was transformed by Artemis in the magnificent animal.
It was the third of the famous twelve works of Hercules, King Euristeus demanded from Heracles to capture the animal. Wanting to avoid hurting the doe and displeasing the goddess, Heracles chased her tirelessly for a year, going through many regions of Greece and even beyond. Finally the doe, back to Arcadia, sought refuge on Mount Artemísio. Still with Hercules on his scent, he tried to cross the Ladão River, where she was reached by the hero. Exhausted, she was slightly injured by an arrow he fired. Heracles put it on his shoulders and led her to the kingdom of Euristeus. On the way, however, as he crossed Arcadia, Heracles found Artemis and Apollo, who wanted to take the animal that belonged to them, accusing him of sacrilege. Heracles explained to them that, to atone for the fault of killing his children and Mégara, he was condemned to perform work for Euristeu, whom he attributed responsibility for the incident. In this way he convinces them to let him lead the doe to the king's palace in mycenae, with the condition that he released it as soon as he had seen it. In addition, the hero offered scapegoing sacrifices to Artemis to appease the remnants of his wrath.
