Daughter of Typhon and Echidna.According to the most widespread version of the legend, the chimera was a monstrous product of the union between Echidna - half woman, half serpent - and the gigantic Typhon.
It is a mystical figure characterized by a hybrid appearance of two or more animals.
The King of Lycia had ordered the hero Bellerophon to kill the Chimera (who was killing cattle and "devastated the country"), as he thought the Chimera would kill Bellerophon, "for it was more than a match for many". But the hero mounted the winged horse Pegasus, "and flying high smote the Chimera from on high."
