Description
Son of Nyx.Greek Daemon.
Twin brother of Thanatus.
Roman Equivalent: Somnus.
Consort of Pasithea.
In Greek mythology it is the personification of sleep, and of drowsiness; but not from tiredness as far as fatigue is concerned. Hypnos is one of the Greek daemons: gods who interfere with the spirit of mortals.
He has nine brothers, the most important of which is his twin Thanato, the personification of death. So much so that in Sparta, it is common for his image to be always placed next to death, represented by his brother. His other brothers were born only of Nyx's will.
Hypnos lived in a palace built inside a large cave in the far west, where the sun never reached, because no one had a rooster to wake up the world, nor geese or dogs, so that Hypnos always lived in tranquility, in peace and silence. On the other side of this peculiar place passed Lethe, the river of oblivion, and on the banks, plants grew that, together with the murmur of the river's clear waters, helped men sleep. In the middle of the palace there was a beautiful bed, surrounded by black curtains where Hypnos rested, and Morpheus took care that no one woke him up.
He is often seen wearing gold pieces, as opposed to his twin brother who normally wore silver tones. He can also be portrayed as a naked young man endowed with wings, playing the flute. Sometimes he is shown as sleeping on a feather bed with black curtains around him.
During the war, Hera hated her brother and husband, Zeus, so she devised a plan to deceive him. She decided that in order to trick him, she needed to make him so in love with her that he would fall for the trick. Then she washed herself with ambrosia and anointed herself with oil, made especially for her, to make Zeus' resistance impossible. She wove flowers into her hair, put on three shiny pendants as earrings, and put on a wonderful robe. She then called on Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and asked her for an amulet that would guarantee that her trick would not fail. However, she lied to Aphrodite because they were on opposite sides of the war. She told Aphrodite that she wanted the spell to help herself and Zeus stop fighting. Aphrodite willingly agreed. Hera was almost ready to trick Zeus, but she needed Hypnos' help.
Hera called Hypnos and asked him to help her by putting Zeus to sleep. Hypnos was reluctant because the last time he put the god to sleep, he was furious when he woke up. Hypnos managed to avoid Zeus by hiding with his mother, Nyx. Hera offered several gifts but none convinced the god, Hera finally got him to agree, promising that he would marry Pasithea, one of the youngest Graces, who he had always wanted to marry. Hypnos made her swear by the River Styx and called upon the gods of the underworld to be witnesses, so that he would be assured that he would marry Pasithea.
Hera went to see Zeus at Gargarus, the highest peak of Mount Ida. Zeus was extremely fascinated by her and suspected nothing, as Hypnos was enveloped in a thick fog and hidden in a pine tree that was close to where Hera and Zeus were talking. He told her that he had never loved anyone as much as he loved her in that moment. He took her in his arms and Hypnos went to work putting him to sleep, with Hera in his arms. While this was happening, Hypnos traveled to the ships of the Achaeans to tell Poseidon that he could now help the Danaans and give them a victory while Zeus slept.
Thanks to Hypnos' help in deceiving Zeus, the war turned its course in Hera's favor, and Zeus never discovered that Hypnos had deceived him once again.
With Nyx he spawned the Oneiros: Morpheus, Icelo and Phantasos.
