Description
Son of Typhon and Echidna.
He was a two-headed dog from Greek mythology. Considered the fiercest guard dog of antiquity. Orthrus was the brother of the dog Cerberus, who guarded Hades.
Orthrus was the mascot of Geryon, a giant with three bodies and six arms, shepherd of one of the largest and best herds in all of Africa. Orthrus watched over his red cattle on the island of Erythia, where Heracles killed him, to fulfill his tenth work. Some say that the original owner of Orthrus was Atlas, the titan who carried the Sky on his shoulders. It is said that after being killed by Heracles, Orthrus ascended to the skys and became the star Sirius (Star of the Dog), which is the brightest star in the night sky.
Others of his brothers and sisters were: The Nemean Lion, The Hydra of Lerna, The Sphinx of Thebes, Ethon the eagle of the Caucasus, The Chimera, Ladan the Dragon of the Hesperides, Dragon of Colchis and Scylla.
