This drawing was done by my best friend who happens to be the concept art director in our game studio. She did the amazing line work and character design, I did the shading. Most of the credit goes to her imo 
This guy's name is Llyr, he is one of the main characters in one of our games that will be released on Xbox 360... um, hopefully next summer.

Thnx! Just keep at it and be patent. I use 3 different 5pt leads: 4H HB and B. I first color it full in 4H the lightest or harder of the leads then I work my way up layering HB then B to add depth to the darker arias.

Ahh, sounds simple enough. I never tried layering with different pencils. Actually, I (Foolishly) have been trying to shade with the same pencil I draw with. Did a whole practice drawing for shading the other night using only a mechanical pencil.
It turned out okay...ish. But it wasn't the smartest idea, and it was a hassle to do.

I use only a mechanical pencil too but you can get different hardness of lead at places like Staples. I have 3 mechanical pencils that I use on one drawing, each labled from lightest to dark. if you use different hardness of leads and layer them you get a really smooth clean look.
