Description
This is a condensed version of the roster to the Crossover Game, the massive hypothetical crossover of my video game collection. The full roster for licensed characters can be found here: leehatake93.deviantart.com/art…This selection screen reflects on the design I would use if my idea ever actually became a video game. Once again, I am using the buttons from a PlayStation 4 controller as a reference.
Using the Naruto games, Mortal Kombat X, and Super Smash Bros as a base, this is how the selection screen is set up.
1. Top Bar: The very top of the image is the stuff you see in the Naruto games and Super Smash Bros. This section displays what battle mode players have selected, the option to go back (which is used to cancel a selection or return to the previous menu), and some tips on manipulating the selections.
-Back Button (Circle): As mentioned before, this is the button you press to cancel a selection for a character or return to the previous menu/exit character selection screen. A basic feature in every fighting game.
-Battle Mode Slot: This area, like in Super Smash Bros, displays what type of game a player is playing. It lists "Tag-Team Battle Royale", which is a free-for-all with support/tag-team partners. I haven't thought of every battle mode, though a couple other examples would be "Team Battle", which is exactly what it sounds like, and "Free-For-All", which removes the tag characters.
-Settings (Option Button): The battle settings are accessed using the PS4's Options button. Like in Smash Bros, settings are used to change the battle mode, adjust whether the battle is timed, focuses on stocks, or is a traditional HP/Stamina-based battle. Other settings include item spawn rates, and pretty much any feature you'd expect from Super Smash Bros.
-Change Pages (L2/R2): Here's where the character selection draws inspiration from the Naruto games, namely Ultimate Ninja 4/Ultimate Ninja 5 and Storm Revolution. Since the roster contains so many characters, fitting them all on one screen would be difficult without either making them too small to see or rendering them in a massive resolution that would need multiple screens to display. So, my solution is the Naruto option of separating characters by "pages". Each page is composed of 35 characters, displayed in 5 rows of 7 slots. This is why you may notice multiples of the same characters in different sections of this image. Some of the characters I chose for the match-up happen to fall under the same page.
-Swap Leader (PS4 Touchpad): Inspired by Naruto Storm 4, Street Fighter x Tekken, and Marvel vs Capcom, The Crossover Game features the option to select more than one character in Tag-Team mode. Not only does this allow players to call on a second character to assist them in battle, it also allows them to use two (or up to 7) characters in a single battle. Like MvC and Storm 4, the characters can be swapped out at any time, and like MvC, each character is treated differently. For example, in a Stamina/HP match, if one character is KO'd, the other character will take their place until they are KO'd. Like Street Fighter x Tekken, though, players can only select two characters per match. Anyway, if you decide you'd rather start the battle as the character you chose as support, pressing the Touchpad will swap your "Leader" character with your support character. This makes it easier to switch them without having to reselect them.
2. Character Screen: The area where the characters are displayed. I will break it down piece-by-piece from top to bottom.
-Name: The character's name and the player's number appear here. If a character has different forms, variations, or special costumes, the name of their Form/Variation/Costume will be displayed in parenthesis () below their name.
-Costume (Square): The Square button is used to change your characters' costume. As in Mortal Kombat X, pressing Square will drop down a list of costume names. When a costume name is highlighted, your character's model will change to that costume. The color of the costume can be changed by pressing left or right on the D-Pad while the costume is highlighted.
-Swap Character/Change Style (Triangle): This feature is not available to every character in the game as it applies only to characters that can swap out with another character as part of their moveset, or change movesets during battle. Examples of these types of characters include Goten and Trunks, who can swap out with each other, or Toro Inoue from PlayStation All-Stars, who can change his fighting style by changing clothes. Two examples of this character type are shown in this image.
-Change Form (L1): This allows characters to change their form. Form changes previously meant characters that occupied multiple slots, though this has been revamped. Form changes include alternate ages or parallel universe counterparts to characters, like Yuya Sakaki's Dimensional counterparts from Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V or the different ages of Naruto Uzumaki, Karma alignment for Cole MacGrath and Delsin Rowe, Mortality for Telltale Games characters, and simply different movesets for characters that have the potential to have alternate movesets themselves.
-Change Variation (R1): This button lets characters change their Variation. Like Forms, Variations can include alternate movesets or render the character as someone else entirely, such as in the case of certain Pokemon Trainers from the same region. Unlike Forms, Variations do not have alternate movesets as they represent alternate movesets or different characters with similar movesets.
-Character Model: Like Mortal Kombat X, the Nintendo 64 Super Smash Bros, Street Fighter x Tekken, and the Naruto Storm games from 3 onward, I like the idea of characters being represented by 3D models instead of still portraits. The character models will stand in one stance while they are highlight, then perform a dynamic stance when selected. The characters would be highlighted by an outline that matches their player's color. As an easter egg on current-gen consoles and PC, character models would have special animations if a player leaves the selection screen idle for too long. Some characters would perform "bored" or impatient animations, tag-team characters would interact with each other, and characters that can break the fourth wall like Deadpool and my avatar LH93 would tap on the screen or speak as if directly talking to the player.
-Tag-Partner: The smaller portrait underneath the player model is that of the tag-team partner. Above their portrait is a small title card displaying the Team Name of the characters. Not every character has a special team name, though a decent chunk of the roster does. These can either be team names taken directly from the source material (such as The Avengers for Iron Man and Hulk, World's Finest for Batman and Superman, or Master and Apprentice for Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano), Puns (like "Bad to the Bone" for Ghost Rider and Sir Daniel Fortesque), fanfiction/original names (something like "Cartoon Fat Guys" for Cartman and Peter Griffin or "The Awesome Team" for any team up), etc.
-Super Smash and Final Smash: Every character in the game has two finishing moves: a Super Smash and a Final Smash. A Super Smash works like the Final Smash in Super Smash Bros, as in they can range from various attacks that can deal considerable damage to opponents, but aren't guaranteed a KO. A Final Smash, like the Super Moves in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, is guaranteed to KO opponents most of the time. Some Final Smashes, however, function as transformation triggers which change a characters' moveset entirely, but aren't technically a "Finishing Move". A couple examples being Goten and Trunks fusing into Gotenks, and one of Naruto's variations transforming into his Four-Tailed form. The Super Smash is indicated by the blue Smash Ball icon, and the Final Smash is the red icon.
3. The Roster: The boxes at the bottom of the screen are the character roster, divided by pages. There is a small space separating the boxes between players. Each player has their own separate box for selecting characters.
The four characters chosen for this match-up are Ryu from Street Fighter, Boruto and Sarada from Naruto, Delsin Rowe from inFamous: Second Son, and Dylan Holmes, one of my primary Sims and a character from both my original series Hero's Retribution, and a collaborative series known as the Vengeance Shared Universe.
All characters except for Ryu are wearing their default costumes.
Here are the descriptions for each character:
1. Ryu: Ryu is rendered in the art style of Street Fighter V, wearing the pre-order costume players receive when they buy the game from GameStop. I don't have the game pre-ordered, I just like the costume's design. Ryu's costume's name has multiple terms, but some of the most common are "Warrior" and "Grizzled". I went with "Grizzled".
-Form: Ryu's form is called "Crossover Ryu". This covers his attacks he can use in the Capcom Vs series, Street Fighter x Tekken, and Asura's Wrath. Super Smash Bros Ryu is a separate form.
-Variation: Ryu's variation represents his appearance in Street Fighter IV, which carries over to Street Fighter x Tekken and Asura's Wrath.
-Team: Ryu is teamed up with Scorpion from Mortal Kombat X, wearing his Hanzo Hasashi costume. Their team name is "Street Kombat" as a combination of their home series' titles.
-Super Smash: Ryu's Super Smash is the Shinku Hadouken. This variation of the move actually represents his Hyper Combo from Marvel vs Capcom 3, rather than his Final Smash from Super Smash Bros. Also, unlike Smash Bros, this is the only finishing move Ryu uses.
-Final Smash: Ryu's Final Smash is the Satsui no Hado. As mentioned before, not all Final Smashes are used as finishing moves. This one is a trigger that transforms Ryu into Evil Ryu, based on his battle with Asura in Asura's Wrath.
2. Boruto & Sarada: Boruto and Sarada from Boruto: Naruto the Movie and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4.
-Character: Boruto Uzumaki is the chosen character, meaning that he is the one that will appear when the battle starts. If Sarada were chosen, their name would be swapped as "Sarada & Boruto" and they would switch positions.
-Variation: Boruto and Sarada are using the "Teammates" Variation, which allows both characters to fight as a tag-team. Their other variations separate them.
-Team: Boruto and Sarada are teamed up with Tetra from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Hyrule Warriors Legends. Like Boruto, Tetra can also swap out with teammates, reflecting on the new tag-out feature in the 3DS port of Hyrule Warriors. The character she swaps out with is her father, the King of Hyrule. Since only one character can be called out as support, Tetra is the one chosen in this instance. Their team name is "Shinobi and Pirates", reflecting on Tetra's position as a pirate and the rivalry between ninja and pirates.
-Super Smash: Since Boruto is the character chosen, his Super Smash is the one displayed. His Super Smash is his Ultimate Jutsu from Storm 4, which is his Vanishing Rasengan he used in Boruto the Movie.
-Final Smash: The real name of this attack is unknown, so it is codenamed "Secret Technique" until Storm 4 is released. Secret Technique reflects on Boruto and Sarada's Combination Ultimate Jutsu from Storm 4.
3. Delsin Rowe: Delsin Rowe is specifically named Evil Delsin because he was selected in his Evil Karma form.
-Form: Form actually denotes Delsin's Karma, and in this case, he's evil.
-Variation: Delsin's Variation is called "Second Son" as it reflects on the abilities he gained in inFamous: Second Son.
-Team: Delsin is teamed up with Alex Mercer from [PROTOTYPE] since many people compared [PROTOTYPE] to inFamous back when the two series were first released. Their team name is "Bio-Terrorists" since it is the derogatory term for superpowered beings/Conduits in inFamous: Second Son.
-Super Smash: Delsin's Super Smash is Karma Bomb, which changes depending on the power he uses. Smoke turns into Orbital Drop, Neon is Radiant Sweep, and Video is Hellfire Storm. Since Concrete has no Karma Bomb in Second Son, Delsin will use Orbital Drop again.
-Final Smash: Delsin's Final Smash is Concrete Golem. This is not actually a power used by Delsin himself, but instead one used by Augustine, the antagonist of the game. However, given enough time, Delsin could develop this power, and this makes up for Delsin not having a Concrete Karma Bomb.
4. Dylan Holmes: This character began as a Sim I created for The Sims 3, and has since become one of my most-created Sims in the series. Though he debuted in the Xbox 360 version of the Sims 3, Dylan represents his PC counterpart to make him more unique than the other Sims in the game. Outside of the Sims, he appears as a character in Soulcalibur, the son of Cole MacGrath in an inFamous crossover with my original series Hero's Retribution, and a superhero in the Vengeance Shared Universe, a collaboration between Hero's Retribution and 's Bio-Man.
-Character: Dylan Holmes is actually one of many variations of himself. In the PC version of The Sims 3, I discovered a supernatural elixir that instantly clones your Sim. Anyway, I got carried away and ended up with five versions of the character, which I proceeded to rename with subtle name changes and re-coloring their clothes, nothing else. Four of them are playable as alternate styles for Dylan.
-Form: Dylan has multiple counterparts throughout the Multiverse, though the one chosen for this match is a Sim.
-Team: Dylan is teamed up with Cole MacGrath from inFamous, though he is rendered in his design from Street Fighter x Tekken. Their team name is "Father and Son?", which reflects on the fact that this version of Dylan was born to a Sim of Cole, though the real Cole's relationship to Sim Dylan is unknown.
-Super Smash: Dylan's Super Smash is original, called Holmes Legacy. As mentioned before, Dylan has a lot of clones in The Sims 3. This Super Smash sees them all team up together for a team attack, similar to Mega Man's Final Smash from Super Smash Bros. Each Dylan is a different type of Supernatural Sim: a Witch (Yellow), Werewolf (Red), Vampire (Black), Ghost (Orange), Fairy (Purple), and Zombie (Green).
-Final Smash: Dylan's Final Smash is Time Paradox, taken from The Sims 3: Into the Future. As the name implies, Dylan uses a time machine to erase his opponents from history.
