Thanks for showing us from start to finish. Really shows us the process and time it takes to get a complete picture. This is digital painting right? Is there a purpose for shading in black and white before putting the color? When I did digital painting I normally just put a flat color and then darkened and lighted whatever areas I thought necessary to.

very interesting question!
Yes I was used to use color from the start like you did, it feel so good though. But it only for portrait and something simple that I already know what to do with it.
When it come to some thing difficult, I'm not sure how it turn out, where's the light source, reflection, cold color, warm color, to control all of those at the same time make me confuse.
This technique help me to do one thing of a time. When drawing in black and white I only focus on making form and shape. Then apply color I can play with many cold and warm colors.

It's just personal that I feel this way is easier for me

Very smart, and good points. Now that I think about it a friend I met in design school had told me (when I was making a logo) to focus just on the shape and design of the logo and to use ... cyan and yellow? And once I liked the form to play with colors afterward. So I assume it's a similar thought process. Thanks for the tips!
