The fact that the lion could be a mountain lion which was sacred to the Cherokee.

Cherokee Cherokee.
I seem to hear that tribe everywhere nowadays.
It wasn't only the mountain lion that was sacred. All life forms are sacred in a way; some more than others.

I know what you mean. There are others out there. Can't remember when or why mostly the Cherokee was made so famous.

Yes. all life was scared, the owl and lion more so to that tribe.

I think it's because Wes Studi's probably the most famous Native out there right now and he's full-blood Cherokee. Though go to one of those morons that claim "I'm 1/88th Cherokee," tell them to name another Indian tribe they just give you a blank stare.

A lot better of an answer than I expected. But just so you know, Native Americans aren't always about feathers. We have a lot of pride as well (well, most of us anyway).
To be honest, I've only met one Native that was actually like the stereotypical Native [stern and "Talks. Like. This. Funny, hahaha" ]. Most of us are actually quite laid back, joke around a lot, and we love to have fun. ^^
Does this help any?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

meanderingKnight In reply to PhantasselArt [2012-12-08 02:42:26 +0000 UTC]

To be absolutely honest, Natives dress just like every one else does nowadays.
But back then, we didn't put a lot of work into clothing. It was a resource to stay warm, you know? It wasn't necessarily revealing, but it wasn't covering every inch of their bodies.
Native American's used bones, pebbles, and other resources like that for beads until they had contact with settlers (mainly the French). They never wore full regalia (fully beaded detailed dresses or outfits) unless it was a special occasion. There's a myth buster.
Another thing was that if women were to bead something, they would keep passing down the item in the family until it had absolutely no use anymore. Native Americans hated wasting things because everything was a valuable resource; furthermore, it is very disrespectful to the animal itself. So we even use/deer tails as a decoration of some sort.
If a woman wore large animal teeth around her neck, it symbolized that her husband was a very strong and successful hunter. :3

If you're not enrolled, you're basically not recognized as having Native blood.

You have to recognized by the bullshit U.S. government in order to be considered having Native Blood? All anyone has to do to figure out I'm Black is to look at my ancestry! This god damn backwards country!

So do you yourself live in Washington State?

Pretty much. Every tribe is different with how much blood you have in order to be enrolled though. For instance, the Spokane Tribe only allows you to be enrolled if you have one fourth Spokane blood.

Can you remember the conditions on the reservation? Are Natives treated with some respect outside of their collective areas among the other races? Are their more Natives outside in U.S. cities or on reservations in the state where you live? Because I don't have all that much trust in the internet on information on Native Americans as one source told me that New York City has the largest population and since I live there, I can tell you that is absolute codswallop!

Please feel free to tell me if I'm asking you too much. I'm just very interested in how Natives live today, because their under-representation in news, politics, and media makes my blood boil!

meanderingKnight In reply to sacramenteens [2014-05-30 02:36:08 +0000 UTC]

Currently, the largest issue at hand on the Spokane Reservation is the fact that the tribal council wants to dig up more of the land in order to fill the Midnite Mine. So, basically our leaders want to ruin our land even more by digging a hole to fill a hole. The real problem is that we have to fill that hole because the radioactive waves are giving the citizens lots of health problems.

At my school we're treated the same as everyone else. The only thing is, I just have to answer the question "Are you Native?" and such.
I believe there are more Natives outside of the reservations, but they aren't exactly proud of their heritage as those are who grow up on the reservation. Does that make sense? Those who grow up on the reservation surrounded by Natives are more proud of their background than the ones that aren't.

Oh that's fine! :3 I am actually really happy that you are asking questions! Its my job to educate people about my culture, and make others more aware about their surroundings and how our tradition fits into society today. ^^

sacramenteens In reply to meanderingKnight [2014-05-31 19:36:15 +0000 UTC]

How's this for an idea? If I were the tribal council (or in charge of the U.S. which I never will be because I'm not left or right and this stupid country loves extremes) I'd invest money to build a nuclear plant at the Midnite Mine so that the radioactive waves can be used to produce energy like the ones in France and Japan and also give people on the Reservation jobs at the plant.

Speaking of those stupid "Are you Native" questions, Holy God! I bumped into video titled Shit White People Say To Native Americans (www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLEqfh… and it's so funny (if you're into bitter, sad but true humor) because it seems like the exact same things everyone thinks about Natives! It's like they don't even process the questions through their thick skulls so that it can come out respectfully or intelligently! I'm sick of it!!!

On the topic of Native people outside of the reservations not being proud of their heritage; don't worry, you see that issue ALL THE TIME with Black people, it's disgusting! The area of New York City I live in has a large community of blacks from the West Indies and all the kids at my school are SO OBNOXIOUS about how Haitians are destitute animals from a 3rd world toilet or their utter persistence to denounce the true African culture and associate with barbarism and lawlessness, just like the White man did and still does today! What the hell is wrong with these people?! Can they please get educated and read a history book to learn why being a Black Christian makes you an Uncle Tom instead of twerking at prom?!

I'm sorry. I got WAY off topic there. It's just kind of strange (in a negative sense) to see this issue among other races.
Thank you so much for being okay about my inquiries (I like big words)!

For one, I would believe that would be a bad idea just because we're trying to fix the problem instead of maintain it. The uranium from the mine is causing a shit ton of deaths and cancer related problems. Although it does sound like an appealing idea, the tribe wouldn't be able to own the business anyway. The government would be invading our lands and claiming the mine as theirs. It's just not worth the risk.

I watched it and it's super funny. And so true too!

Of course! ^^ No problem!

I suck at Chemistry, anyway. Typical; Natives have the chance to make life better for themselves and of course the government has to fuck it up! Instead of invading our your people's land they should be fixing the problem of SCHOOL SHOOTINGS happening every other eleven minutes! I swear, if this shit continues, school shootings will be to this craphole of a country what rape is to India (for more information on that problem tune.pk/video/115105/india-a-d… . Hell, if they want engineering and accounting to be the highest paying and easiest profession (leaving artists, philosophers and writers to scramble for the dog scraps) the government should use those people to work to fixing problems like the Midnite Mine instead of installing the newest iPhone that can fit in a dickhole and diet pills! Maybe it is best I move to Canada or England when I'm old enough...

But getting away from politics (at least for now), are you comfortable with telling me what living, educational, and working conditions are like for those outside of the reservation? What I mean is what kind of jobs and education do most Natives around where you live have?

Also, are you familiar with Sherman Alexie? Thanks again!

I'm not quite positive about those living around me, but my mom is an Air Quality Coordinator, and my step-dad has his own green plumbing business. My mom's friend is now on the Tribal Counsel for a tribe over in Idaho. As far as living, we try to live as green as Spokane lets us. We recycle everything we can, we have a garden, and we have dogs to eat left overs. I'm in highschool right now, but in a few years, if I apply, the tribe can help pay for college through a grant. The only thing is, from what I've heard, those who have gone to college weren't able to get a job on the reservation, even though the tribe payed for their degrees. I think that's kind of bologna.

YES! I love Sherman Alexie! He's actually one of my friend's uncle. He babysat me like twice when I was younger. He's really funny. I especially love his book Flight. That's my favorite novel by him ^^

OH MY GOD YOU KNOW A CELEBRITY!!! I wanted to buy his book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian but I wasn't able to because my computer was giving me problems (which is also why it took me so long to respond). But STILL, you're SO LUCKY! Sometimes I feel like I'm so trapped I'll never even go to famous places in my own frickin' state! What would you say about that book (NO SPOILERS PLEASE!)?

And Yes, that does seem like a load of crap that the people that get you a degree can't even get you a job. If anything, take comfort in the fact that Fasfa, Tap, and a number of other financial aid centers help others all over the country pay for a college and yet so many of all backgroundsΒ leave drowned in debt and still not able to find a job.

What do most Natives around where you liveΒ WANTΒ TOΒ or tryΒ to be (jobs, professions)Β when the become adults, meaning what are popular jobs? What would you like to doΒ when you grow up?Β Are there many Natives where you live that try to be traditional in day to day life, and if so how do they get along with those that aren't so traditional?

meanderingKnight In reply to sacramenteens [2014-07-07 04:46:23 +0000 UTC]

The book was great and well done. The only thing is, there are a lot of parts in the book that are greatly over-exaggerated (I've asked him), yet are very satisfying. You'll find its a great read for any age.

I guess that's something I can look forward too.

The Natives that I affiliate with are more in my science-type classes. They're all wanting to go into nursing, or be some kind of doctor. Which I think will be great and they should definitely pursue.

sacramenteens In reply to meanderingKnight [2014-07-07 13:36:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, well there are a lot of people that go into the medical field and honestly I just wish that they'd just do it for the benefit of helping people get better instead of the money (at least that's what the people around me want to be a doctor for). My mother wanted me to be a nurse just so that she can live vicariously through me and so that I have a stable job (roll my eyes).

What exactly are clans and how do they operate in the tribe? Also, (if it's not any trouble of asking again) What does it mean to be a "traditional" Native, for lack of better diction? Are there many traditionalists where you live or among the Spokane tribe? How do they get along with those that aren't so traditional?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

meanderingKnight In reply to sacramenteens [2014-08-28 00:07:12 +0000 UTC]

That doesn't sound too bad at all. That's really what I want. To choose my own hours. Stable job. And livable pay.
My small goals for living.

Clans are more or so the equivalent to a last name in Native American culture. Although, nowadays we all have last names and refer to those as our family. Before, you weren't allowed to marry within the same clan, but you weren't allowed to identify as more than two clans. Traditional means to practice in any activity that our ancestors once practiced. Whether it be praying, sweating, picking roots, or berries, all of which are traditional. If you live on the reservation, you are raised with traditional qualities. For example, a student can be dismissed from school if they are attending a special ceremony or powwow.
Getting along with someone who isn't as traditional is different for each person. Mostly with people who aren't traditional, we tend to converse about more modern things.

And I'm sorry I haven't been able to get back to you; I've been busy with college which has been a pain in the ass! Though one thing. The two messages I'm replying to were put out Aug 27; what are you doing in school in August? Does school start a month earlier in Washington (state)? lol Just curious.

That one answer about how you couldn't marry someone in a different clan reminds me so much of Don Burnstick: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mucL8c… ; and how he keeps going off about Native banging cousins (DON'T WORRY he's Native too and HILARIOUS!!!!). But that's SO COOL that someone can get off school to go to a powwow. If I get food poisoning, I'm just told to go to school and drink a bottle of ipecac.

Speaking of which, I must ask because this has been bothering me forever: What does the phrase "Ever Sick" mean? I've been looking all over the internet and I can't find a clear answer. Is it an universal term among Natives or just on the rez or what? Also, what exactly are elders and what do they contribute to the tribe? Also I heard that what majority of tribes in the Northwest of the U.S. have in common is that a lot of them fish and rely on the water for supplies and build beautiful totem poles. Is that true?
