Given the ephemerality of the characters in the series its hard to give a crap about any of their relationships after a while. She'll be gone tomorrow and he'll be replaced in a year or two. *poopers*

Despite the wishes of a LOT of fans of the old show, a LOT more emphasis has been given to Rose than any other character (assistant) to date, and to the relationship between the Doctor (9th and 10th). A lot of people speculate it (from a storyline pov) coming from survivor's guilt and general post-Time War angst.

LoL I haven't watched enough of the show to make deep speculations on character motivation; I do think, from a feminist perspective, that the way his assistants are replaced with such frequency displays a certain sense of female characters being seen as interchangeable, whose main function is to assist the great Doctor, who, for some reason they may have explained but I know know of, has never regenerated itself into a female body. Again... poopers.

He's had quite a few male companions too in the past. Trouble is, the nature of the show is such that the Doctor doesn't age and therefore ANY human assistant is pretty much interchangible. In one of the episodes he pretty much says as much (something along the lines of 'humans age, they grow old and they die. I don't...'.

How do they explain why the Doctor doesn't regenerate into a woman, ever?

Time Lords still have genders, why *would* he become a woman? There are plenty of female Time Lords and they don't regenerate into men, so.

I see, I thought time lords were genderless. I remember hearing in one episode he was the last of his kind, but there are more time lords?

No, definitely both male and female Time Lords(/Ladies). The first Doctor travelled around with his granddaughter, though she wasn't a Time Lady herself.

He thought all the Time Lords (not to mention other Gallifreyans and his home planet entirely) were wiped out during the great Time War (which was supposedly between the 8th and 9th Doctor). This was pretty much established canon until Series 3 decided to retcon the idea and give us the return of The Master, who somehow survived also.

In theory he now remains the last after the Master died again, but of course that's as subject to change as any other element of the plot.

Sweet. I demand a female Time Lord to kick a$$ and take names!

N'awww. It's art like this that makes me appreciate Doctor/Rose again, because the absolute flooding of stuff after the finale definitely changed my opinion on the pairing...

BUT ANYWAY. This is sweet, and heartbreaking, but reallyreally good. <3
