it was a pretty regular day at the garage where Red worked, he had almost finished his apprenticeship and his mentor was having the week off, he had the store to himself for a few days... possibly a test from his mentor to see if he could handle himself

Red was out the back staking shelves as he normally did, he always like to see the shelves just the right way, a perfectionist if you will. all of a sudden there was a knock at the door, which made him jump a little, but trying to keep his composure he rolled towards the door and opened it

he wasn't surprised to see the semi waiting behind the door, especially this one, he always insisted on being called "Truck" Red knew that was probably not his real name, but he called him that anyway, and Red got to know him quite well, it seemed that truck only knew this garage...

"hey there red" Truck said casually, "what the hell are you doing here" Red said jokingly, Truck just smiled and said "oh you know the usual" Red just laughed and let the semi in and lead him to the car-lift, "so just a check up then?" Red said as the semi drove onto the lift "you know it" replied the semi, looking around the store, when he said "hey where is your mentor Red?" truck said, "home" red said quickly "got the store to myself for a few days" he continued.

now Truck knew Red quite well, even during the first days of his apprenticeship, Red was working on Truck often, and Truck trusted him which came to a head this day where Truck brought up his daughter, "hey Red have i told you about my daughter Niki" said out of nowhere "not until now" replied Red still working on Truck "she needs to have a major check up, but refuses to go to any mechanic..." truck said as he stared vacantly around the room, Red drove out from under Truck and let down the lift "all checks out... why are you telling me this Truck?" Red said "well... i would like you to have a look at her" Truck said, as Red was taken aback a bit, this would be his first time NOT working on a truck "me?" Red manged to say after a while, "yes you... your the only mechanic that i trust enough to work on my little girl" Truck said, Red was almost speechless at what Truck told him, so he leaned back a bit and said "sure, send her over" Red said trying to cover up his nervousness, "okay I'll send her over tomorrow" Truck said as he headed for the door, "I'll be here" he said to truck as he left the garage.

a day passed Red was again stacking the shelves, when there was a knock at the door, exited but trying to keep cool he casually drove to the door and opened it "Niki" he said to greet his new customer, he looked around for the car that knocked on the door but the only thing he saw was what almost looked like a derelict car... the shape of an RX-8, then that car opened her eyes... it was Niki, she looked up at Red then looked down again, and looked like she was almost in tears, Red couldn't stop staring at her, and had never felt the way he did now looking at this car, not needing to say a word he carefully put his arm around her and guided her into the garage and onto the lift, "you will be fine"

Red said as he put the tube with anesthetic into her mouth, it just dawned on him that this wouldn't just be a check up, this would be the biggest challenge for him, making this car that looks like it should be in the junk-yard, into... well something else, a few minutes later Niki was asleep, and Red checked her undercarriage first as he normally did, and to his surprise it was still relatively intact, just very dirty, that was one less job he needed to worry about... fortunately he had recently put some RX-8 parts away in the storeroom, he went and got the and started installing them onto Niki after he had cleaned her, but something was out of place after he had installed the parts the colors didn't match up, so he had to paint her, and so he did... nothing too fancy just plain blue paint, but he still thought something was missing... then it hit him 'a flame job' so he put on some red vinyls then finally stood back and admired his work, he had done it... somehow

a few hours later Niki woke from her sleep with the same look she had when she came to Red... without saying anything, Red put his tire around Niki and showed her to a mirror, when Niki saw her reflection in the mirror a huge smile spread across her mouth, it was the first time Red saw her smile, Red saw in her eyes that she was overjoyed with what he did, in her excitement she glomped and kissed red, then her voice was heard "oh thank you, thank you Red, i love it" Red was still blushing after the kiss Niki gave him " i have got to go and show dad" Niki said exited, and drove quickly out the door

Red smiled to himself, thinking of what he just did, he made a girl that was down in the dumps, into a confident girl then he turned back to the mirror and looked at himself, seeing that he was very plain so he decided in time to mod himself up a bit

the next morning red woke up with the sun as he woke up he felt a liquid around his tire, could he have drooled during the night, he rubbed his tire across the floor when he realized that it wasn't saliva or water... it was oil, and he was covered in it he opened his eyes quickly and saw that he was sitting in a huge puddle of engine oil, and he knew it wasn't his... but he recognized the consistency of it, it was the same kind of oil his mentor used, then he look down towards his right tire and the lay an oil covered dagger, he look at that side fender and saw that it was covered in the same oil in shock and fear red rushed to the bathroom in an attempt to wash off most of the oil on him

later on in the day Truck came to the door with a sad look on his face, when Red saw him like this, his only thought that something happened to Niki, nervously red said "what happened to Niki?" "Niki is fine and loves the stuff you did to her... but i am here for another reason" truck responded "whats the matter?" said Red as he drove closer to Truck "it is about your mentor... he... he has been murdered Red" the news shocked Red, his mentor was almost like a father to him "how?... no wait don't answer that" Red was finally able to say, Truck stood there in silence, until red said "i think i need to be alone for a while" understanding on what Red must be feeling Truck gave Red a quick nod, then drove off

a day later Red closed the garage, leaving all the memories behind it and took up drifting, while he as drifting it took his mind off the past, and in time he become one of the best drifters around, and had the mods to prove it and whenever in dought you would hear him say "when the past catches up to you, do as i do, drift"
