Description
This is a story a story about a boy who puts his motorcycle above everything else, be it family or schoolwork.Red had a small family; a dad, mum and sister. His mum and dad wanted Red to be smart i.e. be an A+ student and wear ‘adequate protection’ while he is riding around on his bike, however, Red didn’t like wearing protection while he rode around on his bike. After a long argument with his parents Red “promised” that he would wear a helmet when he was riding. But Red didn’t like wearing the only helmet they had at their place, a pink floral bike helmet! He would rather have the wind in his hair.
One day during “exam week”, he got out of bed at 1.00am. He thought that everyone was in bed. His bedroom was on the third floor, of the three story house, his sister’s room was on the second floor and his parent’s was on the bottom floor. Red crept slowly down the stairs hardly making a noise until he reached the last step, it let out a long loud creeeeek, as he put his foot onto it. He quickly took it off, then froze for a few seconds to make sure he didn’t wake anybody. After he made sure that they were all sleeping he stepped over the last step and snuck outside.
When he got to the garage, he walked his bike out (“forgetting” to wear the helmet), onto the road and started it up and went for a short cruise around the block. When the fuel tank was getting close to empty, he wanted to see how fast his bike could go on the straight section of road outside his house. In the distance he saw two headlights coming towards him, saw the driver indicate and start to turn. By the time he saw this however, the car wasn’t that far away. The driver must not have seen Red coming! Red immediately slammed on the brakes, but it was too late and he hit the car and went flying. He did, however, see the figure of the driver, it looked like his father!
Thee weeks after his crash Red woke up in the hospital bruised and battered and missing one of his arms, with his father sitting beside him, a guilty look on his face. “Dad” said Red softly “What happened? Where am I? What happened to my arm?” Red was dazed and confused, his father only answered with sobs and muttered “You’re alive”. Red didn’t get the answers he sought. The answers came, eventually, with the arrival of other family and friends.
Apparently, his father had never left his side following the accident. His father had been coming home late from work and being tired his reaction time was reduced. He was in shock for weeks after realising who had hit the car that night.
Red’s arm had been crushed by his bike as it fell on top of him. He had been in a coma for the three weeks, the doctors had no idea when he would come out of it. Red thought to himself, what would have happened if I had not gone out that night, helmet or no helmet, he was royally screwed. It was hard to believe he would never ride a bike again after he had devoted so much time to it. Exam week was long gone, after the relief of not having to do exams, Red realised he would have to repeat the whole year again. Worst of all was seeing his Dad torn up by guilt, when most of it was not his fault, but Red’s.
In the weeks that followed, Red went through lengthy rehabilitation sessions and fittings for a prosthetic arm. Having a robotic arm wasn’t so bad, it allowed him to do some everyday things, but not ride again! Red went back to school and with no bike to distract him he had more time to focus on his school work. He became more and more interested in robotics and read all he could on the subject. Red now had a goal, to somehow design and build a robotic arm and bike assembly that would give people like himself a chance to do something that he had always loved to do.
Over the next few years, he actually became the type of person his parents had wanted and it wasn’t so hard to do! He was able to join a team of engineers who had the same dream as he did. After his father joined the team the future looked bright.
Red always had wondered where would he be if he hadn’t had his accident. But he found out that life has a way of teaching you a lesson and it’s up to you whether you learn it or not.
