It's a rear engine, same casings, pistons, heads and gearbox as a Beetle, just a flat 'pancake' style.
Squarebacks are dime a dozen, I've got a Notchback.....

I had this exact VW, same color same everything (well within a year or so)
What a great car it was,
a 1969 Square-back Volkswagen
what great memories.
pancake engine in the back
a great bonnet for storage and traveling
in college i could pile 7 + in there for trips up
and down the west coast seeing Dead shows and
camping and seeing my folk in Venice

I see one around every so often on the streets
of Berkeley.
Mine got t-boned while parked one night in San Francisco
and i sold it not long after.
But that baby chugged along forever.
