Description UPDATE: New and improved quality, people! It looks SO much better now Also notice the awesome metallic Alphonse After finishing that candle holder in "The Gentleman of Lost-Hope" I figured that I can shade metal better than I thought So I decided to fix that pathetic shading on Al's armor. Looks good now, ne? ^^

Hmm, what can I say? This is my first big original drawing. Original meaning it's "out of my head": it's my idea, Ed is drawn without any references, and the scenery, too... Admittedly, I used a reference for both the text and Al's armor, 'cause really - that armor suit has too many details! (although the shading was done completely by me). But otherwise it's all mine So I'm kinda proud of it.

Now that I look at it, it's not THAT good of a drawing, and I see a lot of things that could've been done better. But nothing is perfect, so I'm trying to comfort myself with this ^^

If you've got any tips for drawing good-looking landscapes (and not crappy ones like the one above) - please do share them with me! I'm ok with drawing the characters themselves, but when I have to put them into some sort of a scenery, I'm usually quite lost.

Anyway, I'm talking too much. Constructive criticism is welcome, as well as any other comments! Hope I didn't disappoint you too much ^^

Здравствуйте! Выкладываю скомпилированную подборку от модераторов Rus-Club, отвечающих за раздел Anime and manga.

Тут основное на что хочется обратить внимание - понимание перспективы картины. Такие ошибки часто случаются, когда вначале рисуется один объект, а затем, вдруг, решают добавить еще что-то, при том, чтобы обязательно уместилось на холсте. Прежде всего надо обязательно планировать композицию, например нельзя одновременно нарисовать героя "вид сверху" и, чтобы было видно горы на заднем плане и т.д. Здесь, наоборот, герои изображены идеально сбоку, при том Эдвард находится выше Альфонса. По-идее, при виде сбоку братья должны бы были стоять на одном уровне, а линия горизонта спуститься гораздо ниже. Вообще перспектива тут небольшая, напоминает довольно приличный зум, но при зуме задний фон начинает размываться, в карандаше обычно в таких случаях задний фон рисуют менее детально и светлей, но в эту схему не подходит дерево. В общем каждый объект в картине находится как бы в своей системе координат. Для тренировки я бы посоветовал на месте героев порисовать вначале кубики, чтобы уже на этом этапе увидеть все ньюансы перспективы, а затем в кубики можно вписать героев. В общем законы перспективы довольно просты и изучаются за пару часиков. Так же советую не стесняться - придавать побольше контрастности, а то сейчас герои почти однотонны, градации незначительны.

Wow! This kicks some MAJOR butt!!! It's very emotional, too, which is the most important thing to nail in a pic like this. Very, very cool.

I may have a tip for you when it comes to drawing backgrounds. Avoid using detail and outlines. Keep it blurry -- it's not the focal point so it won't draw our attention at all. Plus it saves time. Hope that helps

See the background art further back in both pics? They're blurry but still defined. And look especially at how this artist does leaves -- also blurry, but obviously leaves.

The tree has more detail the closer it is to us, for good reason, but if the focus is meant to be on the characters, that's not needed.

I hope this helps. I had to retype a couple of weird combinations in Google Images to get something to the tune of what I meant.

I dont know much about FMA, but I still really like this drawing. I think the pencil looks fine btw, this is actually really good quality for a photo XD. Anways,,, I would like to say a few things. Im just a beginner artist so Im not sure how much my input means, but I would like to help anyway.
One is, teach me how to draw trees!!! That tree has so much detail and it looks like you really put a lot of effort into it. good job.
Secondly, I really like how you have drawn Ed's (I think it's Ed) hair and clothes.
The only suggestion I could make for this drawing, is maybe put some shiny white spots on Al's armour, to make it look more metallic, and maybe some ripples or something on the lake, because the wind is blowing. Other than that, this is great. And without references too! Congratulations, (and sorry for the essay )

First of all - thanks a lot for such a long and informative comment! Not only I don't mind "essays" like yours, but I like and really appreciate them! It shows that the person took their time to look at your picture in detail and try and help you improve. So yeah - big thanks

Trees? I'm surprised you liked the tree so much, I actually think I suck at trees... If you look at it closely, not all the branches are drawn in detail. I went for the overall "tree look" Some time in the past I came across a tree drawing where the leaves were drawn as weirdly shaped ovals, to make it look like a bunch of leaves intertwined together etc. I used that in the tree here, too, so I guess I kinda cheated All in all, I'm not the one to be teaching you - I still got loads to learn about trees...

Thanks, I erased at least 10 times before Ed's head looked the way it should >.< But at least I kinda got it right in the end, hehe

Oh yes, that's some awesome suggestion! That's what I missed with Al's armor, now I see it. Thanks, will definitely remember that for the future! And the "lake" isn't actually one It's a burnt out piece of soil where Ed and Al's house used to be (you need to know the storyline to know what I'm talking about). That's why I even put little blades of grass on it, since it's been years and years since the boys burnt the house down...
