Thanks to Super Secret Awesome Inside Sources (TM), I have uncovered this artist's rendition of Megatron's original design for Devastator. Initially, when the megalomaniacle Transformer decided he wanted soldiers who could be useful for building things he modeled them on his favorite pastime: gardening! When his backstabbing lieutenant Starscream discovered the plans and threatened to expose the embarrassing secret to the entire Decepticon army, however, Megatron opted to revise his design and changed the Constructicons into human construction vehicles rather than gardening equipment. It was a well-made decision as the combined might of a full-sized Devastator remained one of the Decepticons' strongest assets throughout the war.-----------------
My entry for the Allspark's May art challenge: design a useless alt mode. The breakdown for each of the Constructicons' individual alt modes is as follows:
Scrapper - hatchet
Mixmaster - watering can
Longhaul - pail
Hook - hedge clippers
Scavenger - shovel
Bonecrusher - rake

Devastator doesn't hate all kinds of weeds, just the kinds that ruin Megatron's beautiful garden. There are some he enjoys very much.

Telecon can fire razor sharp blades from its left arm and lasers from its computer head, and it also has a microwave gun!
