Thanks
It's from the first Dracula he was in , so he must have been in his 30's
As an actor he's always seemed 50 or older!

He did at that, it's kind of hard to picture him at any other age. I'm so used to seeing him with wizened and gray features.
But I gotta say he looked good at that age. So many actors only look right at one age or another

Most pics of him as dracula are from the later ones when he was in his fifties and was going grey .
before that he had been in the mummy and frankenstein movies but was totally covered in make up , so it's hard to judge his age
As you say ..he one of these actors hat you think of as middle aged their whole life
peter cushing was the same , he always seemed old , even in his first movies

I recently watched the Two Faces of Dr Jekyll from 1960, I'd never see Christopher Lee so young before. It was a surprise seeing him him so youthful!
No sign of grey in his hair or lines on his face. He was a secondary character but he stood out.

I've seen some clips from that . C Lee was born to play evil characters , he has a cruel quality about him .
The only time i can think of him playing someone nice was in the BBC version of Gourmenghast

He does have a certain evil flare about him. It's like picturing Leslie Nielsen in a serious role.
I'm sure I've seen C Lee in a film or two where he was a good guy but they are few and far between

I tried to research it
he played none evil parts in devil rides out , hound of the baskervilles etc, but was never actually nice as such!

I tried researching roles where Chris Lee was good.
As you say he was non evil in some parts , but still not a nice chap
the BBC adaptation of gormenghast is the only example I can think of.
Lee wanted to play Gandalf in the LOTR movies
I can see him doing the "You cannot pass " stuff , but not the bits where he has a cozy chat with the hobbits

I had heard that he wanted to play Gandalf, and that he was something of an expert for a lot of the Lord of the Rings stuff as he was an avid reader of the series so he'd explain a lot of things.
I can't help but wonder what it would've been like if he'd gotten the chance to play Gandalf, I think for most of his parts he was just type caste. I think it's because of this that it's hard to picture him in any roles as a good guy

Chris apparently hung around Oxford college and knew J R Tolkien, CS Lewis {Narnia} and Mervin Peak { Gormenghast}
It sounds like a golden age of literary fantasy in one place
Another actor considered for Gandalf was Tom Baker { He's more saruman I think}
Weirdly Peter Jaclkson wanted sean Connery for gandalf!!!??
I can see him as the king of the Riders of Rohan , but he seems totally un Gandalfy

I could imagine Tom Baker as Gandalf. Shame I don't see him in much theses days though.
I recall seeing Baker in an old episode of Narnia that was good
I had heard that Tolkien and Lewis knew each other, but the writer of Gormenghast is a surprise!

I see what you mean, I don't mind one of the armour designs but it doesn't look very inspired, hopefully the end result will be better. Maybe they're trying to save money for CGI

I might be wrong , but I've strong feeling this movie is going to flop hard at the box office.
It's looking kind of ugly and I'm not sure the average cinema goer cares about Dune

I've heard they intend to split it into two movies because of how vast the first book is and they feel it will work best not to water it down. I also read there are plans of an show featuring the Bene Gesserit sisterhood so they really seem to be certain of a success with it. I'm hoping that it's the case and it doesn't fall flat

I can't really see it being that big a success , the average cinema goer just doesn't care about Dune
And we have already had two adaptations that dropped the ball one way or another.
The guy who wrote the Dune encyclopedia saw David Lynches version in the cinema ...and wasn't sure what the bloody hell was going on!!
It would be nice to think this is going to be the finale and definitive version { Like Jackson's Lord of the rings}
but already there weird shit like changing the character that was played by Max von Sydow , into a black female!!!!!??
Making it as two separate halves is awfully risky
We could be in a Ralph Bakshy Lord Of Rings situation
I heard about the Bene Gesserit series
how random is that ? It sounds like It's going to be Hand Maid's tale in space
Hard to imagine there's that many Dune fans clamoring for it

Hopefully it'll surprise us, I doubt it but hope springs eternal.
Not so sure on their idea of changing the genders of the casts though. It'd be cool though if they got Max Sydow and Patrick Stewart to reprise their roles though since they're still alive. That would be cool to see!

I'm worried that the director managed to pad out simple story like Blade r 2048 .I hate to think how slow he could make Dune. The gender swapping seems silly , Dune already has strong females in the bene gesserit and Paul's mother ..though i suppose they are all witches! ??
Max Von sydow passed away a couple of weeks ago ;{
I'll be sort of amazed if Dune part 1 does well.
I was reading that the novel was very much a thing of it's time... late 60' / 70's
It''s interest in mind expanding drugs and mystic faith's plus the rather heroic view of middle eastern factions { which has become a bit tarnished}
There's something about the novel , that just doesn't translate to film , , be it the main story or the underlying details
or just the way it's written.
Peter Jackson did a great job of bringing the LOTR to life n a way that's complex , but easy to understand for the average viewer . he also managed to make it seem "real"
Dune on film never seems to have that tone

Sydow had a good innings , he was in his 90's
I forgot about Chani
The miniseries one was fairly good
It would be nice if the new movie was a runaway success , but it's kind of a sci fi version of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe , where only the first book /story has any appeal to the average movie goer and the sequels lose steam after one or two ,
Even the BBC didn't get more than four in to the six or seven Narnia stories
Interest seems to just fade away
I can see the first film under performing and lucky to even finish the first book with it's part 2

The idea of splitting it is sort of good , though I feel the director , will just tell the story in a very slooow blade runner 2048 pace, anyway. It's that they aren't filming the both halves at once. Principle photography using the same sets , actors , and extras , for key scenes in part 2 would surely be cheaper to film now .They run the risk of actors dying between the movies and needing recasting etc. Most of part 2 would involve the Freman and various desert battles , so they could , leave them for filming later. I suppose.
It's heading into "IT" 2 territory , where it feels bolted onto part one rather than a second half of he story
The biggest problem is that , if the first under-performs { And that could well happen} here won't be a part 2 !

From what some chatbacks have said the baron isn't going to be as fat as the two previous versions !!??
I'm hoping this version , wont have the urge to act over the top
The weirding modules were something added by David Lynch , thy aren't in he book . Paul uses the weirding way , an advanced marshal art and "the voice"
an odd set up where words can be destructive
his Freman name Muad Dib { Little mouse} is a weirding word
the fact that the freman gave him that name suggests he's very much meant to be a boy in the book, rather than the too old actors we've had playing him.

That was one of the criticisms of the Lynch version , he added stuff to an already over completed set up
Part of the problem with the book is that , projectile weapons aren't used in that universe and all fighting seems to be done entirely with knives { not even swords !!??} it makes for awkward battles for film adaptations
I think Lynch was trying to add weapons that worked a bit like guns and fitted into the dune universe
Considering the "Spice" is so important to the story , what it actually "is" gets totally lost in both the book and both screen versions.
I thought it was the remains of a young / baby sandworm , that has hit a pocket of moisture deep in the sand and it literally turns it inside out , creating an explosion on the desert surface .The dried remains , becomes the spice
But according to wiki it's just the secretions of young sandworms mixing with moisture , that causes an explosion and then dries out in the sun to become the spice
It's all a bit confusing!!

In the books past , they had a terrible war and all projectile and nuclear weapons were banned .
Computers were also banned , that's why they had Mentats , human computers { Brad Douriff in the movie} Mentats took some drug as well that stained their lips
I think Frank Herbert was a bit of a pro drugs hippy , he seemed to think they were the answer to everything!
The no guns thing is odd
They have spacecraft , but fight with knives
Not sure why they don't have swords
in the new movie that level of thick armor on james brolin , suggests , more than knives are used ??

That's exactly what I thought
is there a law on how big the knives can be?
And when does a really big knife, become a small sword ?
The Freman seem like they.ed ignore any rules on guns and the Harkonens seem the type to cheat as well!
You'd think very powerful crossbows would be common at least , or spears
How are the rules enforced?
It's something that doesn't make sense. Perhaps Herbert was trying to get away from the laser gun cliche of pulp science fiction , but alternative seems weird

It looks like everything apart from blades are banned
Does look like swords are used though
This wiki page suggests blades are used because of the electric shields { I think}
But the whole thing seems just as confusing as the exact origin of the spice
I'm begining to think that one of the problems with translating the story to film.a lot of it is hard to make sense of !

As it's the shields that cause the massive explosions , you'd think the shields would be banned
It's like every time there's a minor shoot out on Earth , someone sets off a small atomic bomb !
Just not practical.
Besides the Freman don't use shields as far as I know , so the Harkonen's could shoot freely at them!
The whole set up is just muddled and a bit silly
Part of the reason the film will be awkward to adapt.Either it explains the use of Knives in great detail , in which case it will still make little sense .
Or ignores that bit , and leaves a casual viewer wondering why no one uses guns!
