Do you shade your art with smudging technique or do you shade it with a penicl? Just wondering, most teachers don't allow you to smudge

I don't use to smudge, but here I did it for the background and some dark areas like the belt, boots and pants = )
I know right? In class teachers didn't allow me either to smudge... XD
