Got a sudden burst of inspiration to draw this piece with Milloch and Glen. I’ve had this scene in mind for a while so I’m really glad it seemed to come together; not only in an illustration but also a written excerpt as well (which you can read below).

|| BOOK II Excerpt ||

Glen’s ears twitched and eyes fluttered open, awoke by the gentle melody of a voice at their side. They sat up, the bruises they’d acquired twisting out a grunt as they moved, placing a hand upon a nearby tree root to steady themself. Resting at the opposite side of that root sat a simply robed figure, their back turned upon Glen as their voice continued to fill the forest; it’s timbre soft and fluttery like a gentle wind whispering through the young, spring leaves. Yet at the same time it was weaved with the strength of a rushing river, cleansing and empowering all that heard it.

Glen could not help but stare as the figure sang, entranced by their song, it’s lyrics in a language unknown to them, yet it sounded both familiar and ancient. They watched as the leaves above them seemed to dance along with the voice, the distant running of the river providing a steady flow to the cadence of the tune the figure held.

The figure’s melody melted into a bubbling laugh a moment later, Glen sad to hear it dissipate so soon, yet the figure’s laugh was just as beautiful.

“I’m glad to see you awake.” The figure said, turning to meet Glen’s curious gaze. His speaking voice just as light and strong as he one sang with, also with a hint of melody.

“Who are you?” Glen asked unable to help the question, so entranced as they were by this being.

Another chuckle tumbled from the figure’s lips, his smile one of the brightest and happiest Glen had ever seen, only surpassed by Isamu’s own smile. “My name is Milloch, and I am guardian and preserver of the forests of the realms.”

Instant familiarity rang through Glen at his introduction, of course! How had they not known it earlier? His likeness to the statue they had in their personal shrine at home was not exact but held his key features: An elegant figure robed in simple garments, his long, dark curly hair cascading down his back and framing his face, and the swirls of differing shades, both dark and light brown tints dancing across his skin.

Along with a handful of other spirts Milloch was one of the deities Glen revered alongside the great beasts, his role as protector of the woods of vital importance to Glen as they spent much of their time within his home.

Glen found they could not look upon him any longer for fear of disrespect, never thinking they would have ever been in his presence and not certain how to react.

“I apologize, Lord Milloch, I…I did not know it was you…” They said, grasping with desperation at the proper words.

Milloch shook his head, reaching out to place his hand upon Glen’s head in gentle reassurance. “No, please, dear one…I am no lord. You may revere me and for that you have my thanks…but truly my job is a humble one.”

Glen felt themself relax, but still were uncertain…they’d never met a deity before, and yet Milloch carried himself so casually. He could easily just be someone Glen met within Sorrel’s florist shop, or within Cernu’s herbalist clinic. The only thing they felt gave away his divinity was the pure calm of his aura and the sheer magic they felt from the previous melody of his singing; as Glen had never heard a more beautiful and enchanting thing in their life.

With the sudden pang from the pain from their bruises Glen gasped, remembering what had happened, cursing themself for becoming so entranced and lost in the moment.

“Benjiro! My belongings! The imps they—”

“No need to worry yourself, dear one.” Milloch assured, his hand resting upon their shoulder, gingerly helping them to stand. “Your friend is safe and sound, and I managed to retrieve all of your stolen items.”

Milloch walked them to a nearby meadow where Benjiro laid resting, burring in joy when he saw Glen, the pair rushing toward each other, Benjiro bumping his head into Glen’s chest as they wrapped their arms around his neck.

“Are you alright, you’re not hurt?” They asked feeling around Benjiro’s face and neck, eyes glancing in a frantic search for any sort of injury along the silky blackness of his fur.
The large cat huffed in reassurance, dipping his head towards Milloch who walked up behind them.

Glen turned to face Milloch, smiling as they turned to hug him, a light chuckle dancing from his lips as he returned the embrace.

“Thank you…I was…if I had lost Benjiro and everything…I don’t know what…what I would have done.”

“I apologize for my children.” Milloch said, placing his hands upon Glen’s shoulders. “They’re mischievous but don’t mean any true harm…yet they do test the limits.”

Glen sighed, nodding still feeling the sting of the imp’s ‘mischievousness’ yet grateful Milloch had seemed to pull them out of any true harm’s way.

“However I don’t recommend ever attempting to cross the cursed wood’s depths again, even my power does not hold much sway there.”

“We had no choice.” Glen said, feeling their desperation creeping back into them, in the enchanting moments since they’d awoke they’d almost forgot the darkness and despair they had been wading through the past few months.

“I’m looking for dear friends who were taken from me…and the cursed forest…it was the only path I could take, I could not risk the time it would take to go another road.”
Milloch gently caressed Glen’s cheek, his own expression deepening with a sadness, yet hope seemed to linger within his dark eyes.

“Do not lose hope dear one.” He said, brushing the mussed auburn curls from Glen’s eyes. “All will come to peace in the end, despite the sorrows you have and will encounter. Keep strength.”

During this time in the meadow with Milloch Glen felt their spirit begun to heal at least a little, and with his words they felt the hope they once thought broken and dashed, allowing itself to repair and blossom once more.

Glen nodded, their resolve strengthening as they held Milloch’s assured gaze. His healing touch lingering for a moment longer before his hands slipped from Glen, dipping into his robes to retrieve a raw emerald upon a woven cord.

“Take this, it will protect and guide you whenever you are within my home of the wood, with it you can never be lost again, and will always be protected against any harm that will try to befall you.”

Glen took the gem, aghast and beyond grateful. “My lo-ah…Milloch…thank you. How could I ever thank you, you’ve done so much to help me.”

“Keep going. Find your friends…live happy, this. This is how you can thank me.”

Milloch offered one last touch to Glen’s hands, cupping them then releasing them, taking a step back as he turned to leave. Glen’s heart suddenly dropped, rushing after Milloch as he strode away.

“Wait! You’re leaving already? Can’t…can’t you stay a moment longer?”

The peace Milloch had given them was something they hadn’t felt in so long, and they knew with him they were at least temporarily safe from the world that sought to harm them.

Milloch turned to catch Glen’s desperate gaze, a soft smile upon his lips. “Much still needs to be protected, such is my duty. But do not worry…we will meet again dear one, do not fear.”

With no more than a whisper Milloch faded from view, seeming to be taken by the wood itself, the last thing Glen heard was a distant voice upon the wind, it’s gentleness and strength urging them upon their way.

~End~
