We at least agree that Communism is a more extreme system.
Haha.
I really want to end this thread. I think it's finally petered out.

No, there are three branches, each branch has roughly a third of the power. The Executive has been increasing its power artificially, completely ignoring the Constitution

So, there are only 3 voters, really?

Nolo84 In reply to Skariaxil [2008-03-17 20:34:18 +0000 UTC]

3 voters? No, there's the "Gang of 535" (Congress, which consists of two houses: the House of Representatives and the Senate; they make up the Legislative Branch), there's the 9 Supreme Justices (the Supreme Court of the U.S., you don't hear about them a lot over there, but they are extremely influential and important; they are the Judicial Branch) and the President and his officials (like Secretary pf State, these are the Executive Branch). All of these officials, with the exception of the Supreme Court, are elected. I believe all of Congress is elected by popular vote. One thing I think really needs to happen is that Congress needs to have term limits placed on its members. I also don't like how Congress has a lot of power over itself. Congress is technically the most powerful branch, but because it's made up of 535 differentially-minded individuals, it really does a lot less than it might. Which is good. We the people have a lot of power, actually. We are always calling people out. There's a candidate running for President right now that has rallied a lot of home-grown support. His name is Ron Paul. John McCain is often talked about being the Republican nominee. The Convention has not happened yet. Lincoln got the Republican nomination at the last second, so the nominees are not yet decided in either party, though they are each down to two candidates. Ron Paul wants to strip the Executive Branch of a lot of its artificial power, restore free-money markets and economic policies and get out of Iraq (the only thing of his that I don't support, but I am finding it is less and less of an issue). He's the candidate I support. The media over here hates him, and often censors the votes he gets. It pisses me off.

No, I ment, it's like the American presidential election system, but with only 3 "states".

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nolo84 In reply to Skariaxil [2008-03-17 20:45:50 +0000 UTC]

No, there are 50 States. Checks and Balances are about different areas of government having control over other areas. For instance, the justices of the Supreme Court are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The Senate can impeach the President (and place laws restricting his power). The President can veto close bills by Congress (the Senate and House). There is no voting, it's just having personal ambition work against itself. See, the founders figured out that people will always try and get more personal power. So they made a system where, theoretically (and in reality, if we still followed the Constitution closely), whenever someone tried to increase his own power, he would do it by decreasing the power of another person in government. Hence the balance of powers. One power can check another. That power can restrict the other one back. It's a divide and conquer strategy implemented in politics. As long as the government is fighting with itself, the people win.

By the way, have you ever read the 2nd Amendment to the United States' Constitution?

Then I have a quote for you to (though it makes no sense at all): "I am afraid that I might not be what I think I am. I think I am an hamburger."
No really, it's a nice quote.

Nolo84 In reply to Skariaxil [2008-03-17 23:47:48 +0000 UTC]

What I quoted was the entire 2nd Amendment. There is a large-ish body of people in the U.S. that want to abolish the 2nd Amendment, saying it kills people. I, of course, want to keep it. We have a court case coming up here, oh, I think it's tomorrow, actually, called Heller vs. D.C. in which a man is suing the District of Columbia for not allowing him to keep a gun in his house. This case will forever define whether states and the federal government can restrict our guns rights. And we have a good shot at winning. Several laws may be stricken unconstitutional by a pro-2A ruling. This is actual balance of powers at work. The Supreme Court can null and void laws passed by Congress as unconstitutional.

You should get your butt over to the 'States. Here you can just walk down to the gun shop, pick up an SKS and you're done.
A lot of my friends hate them, but they'll deal. They've gotten a lot more understanding of me, I think, lately.

Yeah, that sucks, but I don't think I'll be coming to the states any soon, since;
First of all, I'm only 16 and my parents won't allow that.
Second, your presidential election system is screwed up.
Third, as long as I'm around with my current girlfriend, I won't be moving to the states anyhow, since she hates the states for a reason. I understand that, and since I love het more than any weapon, it's an easy made choice.
But nevertheless, I'd still love to go there and buy a nice big rifle (preferably a Barrett M99, though that takes some more paperwork, since it's concidred a "Weapon of destruction")

Yeah. Like there are any weapons of construction. Dumbest term ever.
Our presidential election system is just fine, it's our candidates who suck. The Electoral College is there to make sure the people don't vote a moron into office. It's only been needed, like, once.
And, yeah, I hate not being an adult.
What reason does your girlfriend hate the U.S. for? Did, like, the U.S. spread nasty rumors about her or something? ^_^

Skariaxil In reply to Nolo84 [2008-03-13 18:13:20 +0000 UTC]

^^ hehheh, what about weapons of mass construction then?
well, not really, did you know that in 2000 more people voted for Al Gore, rather than for George Bush, and still he won, here, it's who gets the most votes, wins, rather than who has the most states behind him.
Though you get a lot more responsibilities as an adult, but likewise, there so much more you can do^^ (a guy form my class (who's 18 already) misuses it^^ he writes sick notes every tuesday and wednesday. those days we have ANW (that is, that's what it's called in dutch, i have no idea what the english translation could be), and we have to do speeches, which he seems to dislike)
Well, I guess (and am pretty sure of) that her problem is, is that the price of the Iraqi war was about as much as it takes to supply every human being on this planet with safe and clean water, which also happens to be more or less the amount of money going around in american cosmetics industries every year. In other words, there is so much the US could do about the 3rd world problems, but instead they fight wars and make "peace". And they have some very stange laws. And I mean really strange. Other than that, ths US murder rates are about 12 times as high as the Dutch murder rates, counted per head.

In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote, yes. Doesn't matter. He did not win the electoral vote. That is what a person must win to become president. That's why America does not have a democracy. We have a Republic. And what a beautiful Republic it is, too. I'd much rather Bush be in office than Gore. Gore is a severe nutcase. Bush has his problems, too, and they are ones I certainly don't like, but at least he's sane. As for Holland, that's fine. Your country is about the same size as Virginia, one of our states. Our states elect governors by popular vote (generally), so that's fine and dandy. We do the same thing you do. Our President is the leader of our states, not our people. So he should be elected by the states. The governors are the leaders of the people. Also, the electoral college is there to prevent the people from electing an idiot. Hitler was elected by popular vote. That wouldn't happen here. At least, not if the system was working right.
We spend a lot on war. Yep, we do. We have the money to spend money on war. As for what we could do about Third World problems, well did you know that the U.S. is the largest per capita donor to other countries in the world, far outweighing the number two country? So I really don't want to be chided on how we don't help. I'm 17 and I donate to Ethiopa, Bangladesh, Kenya and Uganda. Does this mean I support the Iraq War? Well, I don't think we should have started it. But I think, now that we've destroyed their country and whatnot, that we should clean up our own mess. And we're doing that. Yeah, we have strange laws. So does everyone else. Did you know that in Illinois, it is illegal for your rooster to crow between the hours of 9PM and 6AM? Sure we have strange laws. No one cares. As for our murder rates, try having as many cities as we have, as big of a culture as we have, as diverse a culture as we have and as effed up a police force we have.
Is America perfect? No. I'm not claiming that. However, I live here and I can tell you that we are the best country in the world by far.
I've been to other countries. My father has been to many, many more than I. We rock. We have problems, but we rock. And we've got the Second Amendment, biznatches.

Well even so, Bush gets to make the laws the citizens of the US have to follow, and he can, without any help, turn down someone else's plan to make a new law, so, he has, to my opinion, to much power and might over the citizens.
As for that, the US also has the highest debts, also severely outweighing the number 2. Did you know that a SINGLE tomahawk missile costs about $800.000, which could better be spent on paying off those debts.
Well you're not the only on i just noticed. In holland, ducttape used to fix a lightpole must eihter be silver or green, (green only of the lightpole turned green with algue).
Well, I know no country is perfect, but i believe America is far from perfect, and far from being nr. 1. 1st, there is the murder rates, which you say come from culture diversity, i disagree. The Netherlans have the most cultural diversity, because we opened our doors to refugees and whoever wanted to live here back in the 1970's. at the moment, that door is closer to closed than opened, because if we havn't done that, there would be only 15.6 million people here right now, opposed to the 16,3 million that are here today, but even before 1970, there were a lot of people with different cultures, because we had a lot of colonies, like the US once was to the UK, and a lot of the people living in the colonies moved to here. 2nd, your "peace making". I believe there is peace in Iraq as soon as US forces leave Iraq with a stable political system, no more car bombs and IEDs along the road, no more terrorists etc. But sofar there is no ending in sight. If you want the best country, look at Sweden Sweden is among the top 5 in low murder rates, has, rated by the whole world, the best democracy, together with Iceland, enormous forrests to compensate for CO2 emmisions (not on purpose, those woods just happened to be there all along), and is powered mostly by hydro-electric powerplants (about 60%). I don't say te US is bad, a lot of great innovations have been done there, and, let's face it, they are the mightiest country in the world.
As for our political system, we actualy have an indirect democracy, meaning that we elect people from political parties (my parents mostly vore for the "Socialistische Patrij" (Dutch name, though the translation is almost the same, that being "Socialist party") or for "Groen Links" (dutch name, means Green Left, a socialistic ,environment oriented, party)), who represent us in the government. They make laws, and they get aproved by another council (of which the members are also elected), and vice-versa.

A.) Bush doesn't make our laws. Congress does. Maybe you should look up the American governmental system before you complain about it.
B.) We have the highest debts because the IRS is a bunch of fucktards and they spend way to much. Even though we probably would still have the highest debts just because we are the biggest.
C.) Yes, I did. Tomohawks are effing useful, though.
D.) Of course America is far from perfect, it's just that everyone else is further from perfect.
E.) 16.3 million people! Oh my God! I can't even comprehend a number that big! You must be the largest country in the world! Seriously, 16M? That's beans, buddy. Studies prove that the more people are in a country, the more murders there are, exponentially. So get off our case.
F.) You assume that I support foreign interventionism, I don't. But to leave Iraq now would be to come in, rape them, and leave. At least this way we're coming in, raping them and paying child support.
G.) IF YOU DON'T FUCKING SHUT UP ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING I THINK I'LL POP A FREAKING GASKET!!
H.) Sweden? The best democracy? Their totally socialist, bud. Socialism don't get by very well. Sweden gets by because they're a small, inconspicuous, easy-to-govern, homogeneous nation. They do have the best schools, though.
I.) By the way, parliaments suck. They just do. I don't feel like explaining it right now, but they do.

An assault rifle is "a military rifle, capable of controlled, fully-automatic fire from the shoulder, with an effective range of at least 300 yards".
Your weapon wouldn't be controllable at the shoulder and would be unable to reach 300 yards effectively. Not to mention that it is widely accepted that any weapon that has straight-cased ammo is pretty much not an assault rifle, for one reason or another.
