Description
I think this counts as fanart (I was tempted to say snootily that it was an ILLUSTRATION and an INTERPRETATION of a well-regarded story, but no, it's plain old fanart). "The Lives of Christopher Chant" by Diana Wynne Jones - amazing book. If I remember clearly the Series with the mermaids might have been tropical, but guys! Grey! It's such a nice color! Also Christopher is probably twice as old here as he should be, but I seem to be unable to resist drawing lanky ankles (plus it's fun to say!).Watercolor & digital & lo-oo-ove for a wonderful author.

I love this book!Β And this is a wonderful illustration of it!Β I especially like the water lines - the definition between what is in and out of water is well painted; a technique I am still figuring out.Β Well done!

Thanks so much! I think watercolor is the friendliest media to paint water in - it's literal but it works!

Oh, a The Lives of Christopher Chant fanart! Such lovely soft colors and shades! It looks fantastic
What an interesting take on the scene, too! I really like how plumb your "fish ladies" are. I don't think I will be able to read that chapter without thinking of your illustration now haha!

Aw, thank you so much!! ^^ I'm thinking of revisiting this painting - I loved painting the mermaids but I haven't got Christopher where I want him yet!

I understand the feeling, though I personally like it just the way it is. But there is never enough DWJ art around, so if you do, I'll be really happy Β

Diana Wynne Jones doing mermaids? This I'll have to read. All I've been through from her so far has been Howl and Castle in the Air...

I LOVE her! The mermaids aren't a major part of the story but they are a charming one. I recommend Deep Secret, too - very strange as all her books are, but I loved it.

When I first saw this illustration, I thought it was charming. Now I've read The Lives Of Christopher Chant (I somehow managed to miss out on most of DWJ's sutff when I was a kid) there's a kind of fridge horror to the picture... but it's still absolutely gorgeous. I love how much personality you get into your figures, and I always love how translucent your colours are. The watery subject really benefits from you skills.
I think you absolutely got the dreamy, innocent vibe of those early scenes in the book.

I wouldn't have guessed it was a fanart of the Chrestomancy Series - I had something completely different in mind when I thought of DWJ's books. But the title really gave it away! And I like your take on this scene quite a lot. It's an interesting change, and the result is very pretty

I scan in the finished watercolor painting, set it on "multiply" in Photoshop and put shapes/gradients underneath the watercolor layer. I hope that answers your question! : )

Hi there,
Unfortunately I can never make it look like the original painting exactly (I think this person does a really good job of that: [link] ) but I try to use that time to fix my mistakes. : ) Thanks!

Thank you, my sweet! Actually, if you observe bottom-right mermaid, you can see where she received a breast augmentation. Go big or go home.

recognized what it was from without the description! it gets all sad when he's older. i like his younger adventures better. i can't remember if it's supposed to be tropical, i think it might be more grey. the dragons were in the more tropical one maybe?
also your chubby mermaids are super fun.

After I found DWJ I have pretty much not read anything else. I am only missing a few of her books from my collection~ So sad she is gone now and this is all the stories we'll have from her, she really is just so awesome.
I should have commented more on your piece now that I think about it~! I think the highlight is how you portrayed the fishy ladies for sure. I can't help but look at all their lovely lady lumps ~~ It also fits the scene well as they are being silly with him and find him just as fascinating as he thinks they are. To be technical with the story-- I think perhaps Christopher's clothes should be more dirty. ^_^
What pushed me to study Illustration actually was her books, and how the covers were always less than inspiring. So excited to see that other enjoy illustrating her stories too~!

I know, she was really spectacular. Thank goodness her books are perfect for re-reading - it'll help make it easier that there won't be new ones anymore. And thank you again! Mermaids are fine, but big beautiful mermaids? That's so much more fun.

omg... i found "Charmed Life" in my dad's classroom when i was a kid and read it like a billion times... i didnt realize there were more books about this kid!!! this is beautiful. I love the seaweed hair and their voluptuous fish bootys :'D damn girl when you gonna make a kids book?

It was bundled together with "Charmed Life", I think...I have the edition where there's a cranky orange cat sitting framed in a pointed stone window. And you should borrow it. I'm gonna make a kid's book soooommmeetiimmme, I swear! But first you have to create an animated series or feature! So go to!

OH MY GOSH what voluptuous merladies you've drawn the young Chant with! I am charmed by how many different textures and patterns you've used for their hair...the best fanart *u*
Also major fist-bump of love for this series -- Conrad's Fate is my favorite~
