BAM!!!
“Ouch…” Getting off the ground, you turned around saw that you left a pretty big crater in the ground. “That warp has some problems. Maybe Sir Michael is not getting enough breaks.” As if Michael heard you, the sky rumbled in response to your comment. “Yes sir, I won’t say anything anymore.” Looking around and checking your surroundings, you see that you landed in an abandoned park with no people.
It seems as if I have landed in Germany. So… who is on the list that’s in Germany… Trying to rearrange your thoughts, you took out the list you took from the court. Let’s see…. One of the missing souls are here. His name is… Gilbert…Beilschmidt? I guess starting with the cemetery is a good choice… The newly departed usually stays there.
Seeing that there was no one around, you quickly covered the crater with your magic and hid your wings and change your attire with magic. “Now I should be fine and blend in.” Walking out onto the streets, you see a group of people dressed in black. Calling out to one of them, you say, “Excuse me, sir. I need to go to the cemetery. Do you know which way I should go?”
A blond man with light blue eyes turned around to meet you. You noticed that his eyes were red from crying, and the stains on his face were clearly visible. But the man didn’t seem to care about his appearance. “You can come viz us. Ve are going to the cemetery anyway.” Finishing his sentence with his thick German accent, the man moved forward slowly, whilst the rest of people in his group seemed to stare at you.
You ignored all of them, and followed the man. After walking for a few minutes, you arrived at the cemetery. The man stopped in front of a grave, and knelt down on the grass. You took a quick glance at the gravestone, and gasped. Gilbert Beilschmidt! Bingo! The man did not notice your gasp, but the others surrounding you certainly did.
The brown haired woman asked you, “Miss, do you know Gilbert?” You sadly replied, “We were acquainted, but to know that he has passed away…” “Who the hell are you?” The question jerked your attention away from the young woman, and you looked in the direction of the voice. Your eyes met with the albino, slender yet built man…who is exactly the man you’re looking for. Seeing that you were staring into bare space, the blond man tapped your shoulder lightly. “Is there something wrong?”
“Excuse me. I must leave. Thank you for your kindness, sir, ma'am.” Bidding the kneeling man a quick farewell, you quickly dragged the man you just saw. “Oww!! OWWWW!! Scheisse! Can’t you be more gentle?!” The man complained loudly, but you held on tight to his arm. Quickly moving to park next to the graveyard, you hid behind a tree, and talked to the man.
“I shall not allow you to swear, Gilbert Beilschmidt.” You said coldly to the man. Gilbert looked surprised. “How did you know mein name? And why couldn’t West see the awesome me?” Is this guy dumb or what? You made an irritated face. “You’ll know later on.” Pulling on Gilbert, you went back to the abandoned park.
Sitting down on a broken down bench, you sighed. This guy’s definitely more trouble than I though he would be… “Hey, answer me, schatz.” You turned around to face him. “You, young man, are dead. Didn’t you see your own grave?” Gilbert went pale, staggering backwards. “What do you mean the awesome me’s dead? I don’t ever remember dying in the first place. Secondly, schatz, how do you know me or my name?”
You sighed. Were souls always this dumb? “Okay, okay. You died in a car crash. You were walking on the road, and some guy just hit you and you died.” The man groaned. “To zhink zhe awesome me died because of a stupid driver…” You continued, ignoring the guy. “Secondly, I’m here to take you for Judgement Day. That’s why I know what you are, and your name.”
“What are you?” Gilbert asked quietly. The fact that he was dead was starting to sink in. “I’m… someone to pick you up. In other words, what you call an angel.” You replied calmly. The man glanced at you. “Schatz, your attitude sucks. How is the awesome me supposed to believe you?” Man, the mouth on this guy!
“Whether you want to believe it or not, I’m an angel.” Reverting back to your normal form, you hovered above the ground, with your sacred robes barely touching the ground, whilst your pure white wings covered your body. Gilbert gasped in awe. The dazzling beauty of your clothing and the purity of the air around you made him feel somehow… blessed.
“What, my change of appearance shocked you much?” Your voice seemed to pull Gilbert out of his daydreams. “Well, sorry if I haven’t seen such… vhatever.” His accent became more thick towards the end of the sentence, with the ever-present blush spread across his pale face. It’s not so surprising, considering that angels have the power to enchant people that can see them…
“From now, soul, I will call you by your last name. And you shall address me as ‘Your Honor’.” You quickly summoned a magic circle, and a light started to envelop the man’s body. “Whooa!! Fräulein, vhat are you doing?!!” Screaming as he floated off the ground, the Prussian lunged at you. Suddenly, the light stopped, and Gilbert fell back down on the floor.
You looked at the man in confusion. Why aren’t the heavenly gates accepting him? “Vhat vere you doing?! I nearly died!” You rolled your eyes. “You already are.” Gilbert rebutted hotheadedly, “The awesome me didn’t forget! It was only a figure of speech.” You knelt down to meet the man’s eyes. “Beilschmidt. You will not address me rudely. Did you forget that your very fate lies in my hands?” You growled at Gilbert.
Seeing that he calmed down (despite pouting), you continued. “It seems you can’t go to heaven yet.” Gilbert stared at you. “What do you mean, unable to go to heaven? I don’t remember having done too many sins.” You replied slowly, “I think it’s because you have too many attachments and regrets left in this world…and you look like a sinner to me.”
Gilbert frowned. “Great. Now the great angel tells me that I’m a sinner and that I regretted my life so I can’t go to heaven. Of course I regretted dying! I never had a chance to say goodbye to West, Liz, Antonio, Francis, or even that piano bastard! You heartless angels don’t understand us humans!!” Panting after insulting you, Gilbert glared at you.
“Beilschmidt. It seems you really want to disappear for eternity don’t you?” You replied with a cold voice. “What I’m saying is, I’m going to lead you to heaven by getting rid of the regrets. You will have to cooperate with me here. But if you’d rather vanish, it’s up to you.”
Gilbert somehow looked relieved. It really seems like he thought I was going to actually exterminate him. What a scaredy cat!
“So? What’s your plan, Beilschmidt?”
Gilbert looked thoughtful for once. “I think that… I want to tell West that I’ll be fine. Tell Liz and the piano bastard that I actually regret not doing anything for them, and wish them a good life together. Say goodbye to all my friends…”
“How surprising. I didn’t think you would wish for the happiness of that woman. After all, she broke your heart, didn’t she?” You replied coolly. But Gilbert’s response would make you surprised once again.
“Ich… I… love her. It is normal for humans to wish for the best for the ones they love, isn’t it?” To hear something so wise coming out of this albino was very unexpected. But at the same time, you felt a familiarity with this man. Why can’t I place my finger on the reason why I feel like this?
“Well, I’ll allow it. It’s a special exception.” Gilbert looked delighted at the thought of being able to see his beloved brother again. “But…” “But?” “Only through dreams.”
Gilbert threw his hands up in the air. “Why can’t I just meet them in person? So that they would actually know that the awesome me came to say goodbye?” You looked at Gilbert with pity in your eyes. “That’s because they long for you. The more they want to see you, the more likely you’ll be stuck on Earth for eternity… alone. And then, you’ll turn into an evil spirit for having to many attractions to Earth, and then I have to exterminate you. I also cannot let them confirm our existence…”
Gilbert sighed, and sat on the ground, although both him and you could see that he was floating in midair. “The awesome me needs to talk to his awesome brother… but if there is no other choice than dreams, then I’ll say goodbye in a dream.”
“Then it’s settled.” You pulled out your mallet from thin air, as Gilbert gasped in awe. The mallet quickly extended, and you hit it hard on the ground, leaving a small crater. “I, the Highest Order of Judgement, Luce de Vita, authorize Gilbert Beilschmidt, to clear his regrets by saying farewell to his beloved ones.” The crater glowed, and a pillar of light coming down from the heavens covered Gilbert, who let out a tiny surprised shriek.
After the light died down, Gilbert slowly opened his shut eyes. “Did you have to do that? My awesome eyes can’t take a lot of light, you know.” You looked at the floating Gilbert and sighed. “You know, you’re talking to the person who’s going to hand down the judgement for you. If it wasn’t necessary, I wouldn’t wasted my power and time in the first place.”
“The awesome me knows that, at the very least. Why is a high ranking angel like you escorting me, then?” You looked at Gilbert in surprise. It is twice now that this human has surprised me with his intelligence… “I have no obligation to tell you, Beilschmidt. Anyway, I think that you should start going into people’s dreams. That way, you can go to heaven faster.”
Gilbert nodded, despite knowing that you were avoiding the issue about your rank. “Well, might as well start now. So, how do we do this?”
“Okay. So you have to walk into Ludwig’s room, and I’ll help you out from there. Hopefully he’s gone home by now.” Although the sun was nowhere near setting, it has been quite a while since you were here and talking with Gilbert. “West should go home by now. He should follow his usual schedule.”
Seeing that Gilbert agreed, you summoned screens out of nowhere, showing Ludwig entering his home. Gilbert seemed surprised at this summoning, but said nothing regarding your powers. Breaking the silence, you say, “Let’s head down to your house.”
The screens disappeared as fast as they appeared, and you quickly reverted back to your human form, as Gilbert looked in awe. The both of you nodded, and started to walk towards Ludwig’s house. You were careful not to talk to Gilbert, and when you did, you took out a phone, and pretended to be talking on the phone.
“Fraulein, you’re pretty… modern for an angel.” Hearing Gilbert’s curious remark, you raised your phone to your ear and said, “It’s not surprising. Even you seem to know how powerful I am. This illusion is nothing.” Gilbert raised his eyebrow, as if he was evaluating your skills. “Oh, and if you call me Fraulein or any other demeaning words or word that is not ‘Your Honor’, I’ll have to rethink your sentence.”
Gilbert grumbled, but when you glared at him, he yielded without any arguments. “Fine, Your Honor.” You nodded. “That’s better. Oh, seems like we’re here.”
Looking at Ludwig’s home where you arrived at, you find it neat and very well kept, as well as having a great modern design. “Well? What do you think of mein awesome home?” Gilbert kept his nose up high, proud of the clean state of his house despite his death.
“It’s probably Ludwig’s work.” You replied bluntly, as the Prussian pouted. “Hey! The awesome me does do the housework!” It’s not so bad to tease this Gilbert… You secretly smiled to yourself, and when the Prussian turned around to look at you, your face went back to its usual strict expression.
“Fraulein, it would do you well to smile more, you know.” Hearing a small mumble from Gilbert as he entered through the gate placed a frown on your face. “It would do you well to call me ‘Your Honor’ and perhaps then I shall smile for you,” You replied back in a small voice, despite knowing that Ludwig would not hear any of your whispers. You quickly rendered yourself invisible to the human eye, and reverted back to your heavenly form, your feet floating off the ground.
“Man, you look awesome as an angel.” Gilbert remarked as he was once again captivated by your presence and appearance. “Get on with it already, Beilschmidt. You know that I don’t have enough time to go around helping you all the time. Other souls need judgement too.”
Gilbert ignored you and reached for the doorknob, making you quickly grabbed his arm. “What is it, Your Honor? There, you happy?” Gilbert said irritatedly, but you glared back at him. “There’s no need to open doors, you know. You could just walk through it if you have to.” Gilbert looked at you in confusion.
Rolling your eyes, you took Gilbert’s arm and shoved it right through the door. Gilbert flinched, thinking that he would feel hurt, but realizes that half of his arm was actually inside the house and that you weren’t just making a joke. “Woah… The awesome me can actually go through doors and stuff.”
As Gilbert fooled around and took his arm in and out of the door with amazement, you said, “Beilschmidt, you have the power to manipulate things and mechanisms but not living beings. You better not do anything to them. Doors don’t go opening themselves. Ludwig can’t see you.” Gilbert looked at you with a sad smile on his face. “I know, Your Honor. I just… don’t really want to accept it.”
The way Gilbert smiled and the way he said things really reminded you of someone. It felt more than ever that you had met him before; that he was someone who you treasured in the past. Why does this feeling keep coming back to me? Why does Beilschmidt seem so familiar to me?
Shaking your head, you quickly brushed away every thought, and replied, “I’m sorry, Beilschmidt. I knew you were a good man.” Gilbert’s expression changed to one of awe and confusion. “Never thought you’d ever tell me that I was a good guy.” You looked at Gilbert, as if he insulted you badly. “I’m just doing my job and go through all the information so I can give a correct verdict as well as sentence.”
Gilbert mumbled to himself, “And here the awesome me thinks that you actually do care…” Hearing his hurt remark, you did nothing but ignore it. Walking into the house, you and Gilbert went straight to Ludwig’s bedroom. As you stepped right through the door, you see a simple room, which was kept clean and orderly. It wasn’t too big, and furniture had a modern look. In the middle of the room, you see Ludwig sitting on the bed, looking at the picture of his late brother.
“Bruder…” A hoarse voice seemed to echo the silent room, but Ludwig remained sitting on the bed and staring at the picture. Gilbert looked at Ludwig, and you could see that Gilbert’s eyes held a sense of loss, and his cheeky disposition has disappeared, and a crestfallen one took its place.
“Ich hätte dich angehalten haben… (I should’ve stopped you…)” You see Ludwig’s tears stream down his face, his sky blue eyes covered by his big hands. His slicked-back hair is now messy, and you looked at Ludwig with pity. Every time I see a human suffer, I feel like I suffer too…
But seeing Ludwig’s tears seemed to be the last straw for Gilbert. Gilbert ran over to Ludwig, trying to shake Ludwig to his senses. “West, it wasn’t your fault! It was… I…was….Ich…” Gilbert desperately tried to grab Ludwig, but his hands went through Ludwig’s body with ease. Giving up, Gilbert panted as he kneeled on the floor, defeated. His ruby orbs were filled with tears, but they did not flow.
“Beilschmidt…” Looking at the kneeling Gilbert, you turned around placed your hand on Ludwig’s forehead, and Ludwig went unconscious immediately, falling back down onto his bed. Gilbert stayed on the ground, wiping away any stray tears that could have escaped his eyes. You softly stroke Gilbert’s head, and said softly, “It’s time for you to go to find him. I’m sorry you had to see this.”
Gilbert shook his head. “Nein. It’s not your fault, Your Honor. I will go meet Ludwig now.” You nodded, and took Gilbert’s hand, placing it onto Ludwig’s head, and almost suddenly, Gilbert was whisked away, and right into Ludwig’s body, disappearing into Ludwig’s head.
You looked at Ludwig. I want to stop your suffering, Beilschmidt… both of you.
*Gilbert POV*
West, you have always been a soft one. Although you have a hard exterior, you are soft. Mein bruder…
“Bruder! Vhat are you doing here?” I heard West's voice echoing in the empty white space that I was standing in, and I turned around to meet him.
West looked so tired, as if he had been chasing after me all this time. I took a deep breath, and sighed. Why is it this hard to say goodbye?
“I wanted to meet you! Since the day you went away, I…” West seemed to be choking on his sobs.
“I wanted to see you too, West.” I walked towards West and reached out for his head, stroking it gently. “The awesome me’s here to say danke… und Auf wiedersehen (goodbye).”
West looked at me tearfully. “No! I don’t want you to go, bruder… You mean so much to me… even if you were always annoying.” I grinned at that. West was and is so strict, it always makes me the awesome one. Not that my little bruder can’t be awesome too.
“West. Life was good. The awesome me can’t put it into words, but the time the awesome me spent with you and everyone, even the time when the awesome me fought with Liz and her frying pan…” I feel my sobs catching up to me and tears coming to my eyes but I didn’t stop and steeled myself.
“It was irreplaceable.” West sat on the floor, his eyes still looking at me with longing. “Why did you have to go? Even if you are egoistic and commanding…You’re still my bruder. I didn’t want you to go, bruder.”
I ruffled his hair gently, like I did during the old days. “West, some day… even you’ll be gone. It’s something that happens to everyone.” Ludwig looked up at me, and I could see that he felt desperate. “But that doesn’t mean that you had to go now! Why now?!”
“The awesome me’s gonna be fine. You know it, don’t you? Some day, we’ll meet again.” I smiled, knowing that tears are streaming down my cheeks. “You’ll be fine, West. I’ll be waiting for you.”
West looked at me tearfully. “Bruder, you think that I would be able to meet you again?” I gave West my biggest grin. “Of course! The awesome me assures you! Live your life to the fullest, and… The awesome me's sure to meet you, Luddy!”
Seeing Ludwig’s tearful smile, I closed my eyes as I return.
*Normal POV*
Sensing that Gilbert was done, you placed your hand on Ludwig’s forehead, and extracted Gilbert quickly. Ludwig’s tears flowed out of his closed eyes as he unknowingly sobbed in his sleep. Gilbert stared at his brother, as if he longed to go back to his brother, and as you turned around to look at him you see him you see that he has given up on trying to wear his fake smile.
“Hey, Fraulein…” Hearing Gilbert’s shaky voice, you looked at him, looking up to meet his tear-stained face. “Is this necessary? To say goodbye?” You nodded. “You wanted to do it. If you want to quit, I’ll just leave you here, haunting your brother forever. But… do you really like seeing Ludwig in such a terrible state? Or anyone else who loves you.” Gilbert shook his head. “I have never seen West so… sad. So beaten.” He exhaled sharply, trying to brace himself. You found yourself placing your hand on his lean yet muscular frame, as if you feared that he was falling apart. You were surprised by your own actions, and Gilbert himself was surprised to see that of all people who could comfort him, it was you.
“Hey… Beilschmidt. You said it yourself didn’t you? That you'll meet him again someday. There’s no need to be sad. It’s only just a short goodbye.” Hearing your enlightening words, Gilbert plastered his smile back on. His smile doesn’t seem to look fake. Maybe Beilschmidt might even be a good one for once… “Danke, Your Honor. Never thought that I would be comforted by a schöne Engel though.”
“Beilschmidt, I thank you for your rather… comical comment and addressing me by my title… But I’d rather you state my title every time you address me.” Gilbert looked at you glumly, pouting and sticking out his tongue at you once more. “Way to ruin the mood, Fraulein.”
Perhaps I was a little too quick in my judgement of this man…
