Description progress shots and some details for my latest work:

many of you asked for a tutorial. sadly, i don't have enough time to make a proper one, but i hope these progress shots will still be useful for some of you. i don't use this particular technique for all my works but i do enjoy it. i've been working with it for a bit longer than half a year now. i hope i'll be able to improve it more in the near future.

----------

EDIT:

as an answer to a popular question, before it gets even more popular lol

how to switch from black&white to colours

i'm sure there are as many ways to do this as there are artists who use this technique, but the general rule is quite simple: just go crazy with layer styles. i use overlay, soft light, multiply and sometimes colour (for certain effects i use some of the others as well), mixing them with some regular normal layers. there is really no set order in which i do those things (although i tend to start with overlay), which is why it's so difficult for me to explain my ways via a tutorial.. it's a bit of a freestyle for me. if the number of layers gets too high i simply merge them all and keep working on top of that.

i hope this answer is enough. if there is anything else you'd like to know, simply ask me in a comment^^

if you find thid helpful i'll try to upload some more progress shots for other works in the future~

This is great. Although to me the transition of how you move from the black and white to the colors would be extremely helpful

I'm very interested to know how you go from gray to color. I guess you use some kind of layer overlay, but which one? I've tried several but I can't get a natural but vibrant looking effect. Also, how many separate color layers do you use? (or are you one of those people who uses a trizillion layers? )
Thanks in advance

the question is now answered in the artist's comments^^

as for the layers, i kind of mentioned it above as well but to make it clear: i never really count lol. i work on lots of layers but every once in a while, when there gets too many, i just merge those that i feel won't have further effect on my work. often, i just flatten the image when the number of layers gets, let's say, around 20. of course it's different in case of each work but yes - many layers, merged on a regular basis. i don't want to kill my computer, haha~

also, i save the .psd under a different name every time i do a major change. later i delete those versions that i feel won't be useful in the future. those i decide to keep i burn on dvds or save on other portable disks. i only keep high res jpg of the final work on my main disk (tho, admitedly, i try to make at least two extra copies of those in case anything crashes). safety first~

i hope this is enough of an answer,

thank you~

Thank you for answering! I guess I'll just have to experiment some more then
20 layers! That's not just killing a computer, that's killing me!

The back-up thing is actually a very good tip. I never really thought of doing it that way. Maybe you should suggest that in the artist's comments as well

Thanks again for being so kind and fast
