Description progress shots and some details for my latest work:

many of you asked for a tutorial. sadly, i don't have enough time to make a proper one, but i hope these progress shots will still be useful for some of you. i don't use this particular technique for all my works but i do enjoy it. i've been working with it for a bit longer than half a year now. i hope i'll be able to improve it more in the near future.

----------

EDIT:

as an answer to a popular question, before it gets even more popular lol

how to switch from black&white to colours

i'm sure there are as many ways to do this as there are artists who use this technique, but the general rule is quite simple: just go crazy with layer styles. i use overlay, soft light, multiply and sometimes colour (for certain effects i use some of the others as well), mixing them with some regular normal layers. there is really no set order in which i do those things (although i tend to start with overlay), which is why it's so difficult for me to explain my ways via a tutorial.. it's a bit of a freestyle for me. if the number of layers gets too high i simply merge them all and keep working on top of that.

i hope this answer is enough. if there is anything else you'd like to know, simply ask me in a comment^^

if you find thid helpful i'll try to upload some more progress shots for other works in the future~

You don't need to do tutorial, just do some walktroughs (steps, progresses) like this one. It's inspirating and beautiful to watch you doing your work!
I'm looking forward.
Keep it up! ^^

len-yan In reply to SoraDestati [2011-03-06 03:06:53 +0000 UTC]

first of all, i used some textured brushes that come as basic set in photoshop cs5. then i used one splatter texture in the area of the dark cloud/magic (which is almost impossible to see because of very low opacity, but just to be fair) and two of smoke photos - all of those from cgtextures.com (the link is in the artist's comments)^^

very nice, kinda hope you will find the time for a true tutorial
But this is a start. Maybe draw when you have time and tape it for Youtube, or deviant art or something, just an idea...

keep up the good work

uh. i'm afraid this 'time' might not happen for the next few months;;; i'll be multitasking with company, school and a rather huge project. i will try to provide more helpful resources though ;___;
recording... maybe someday.. maybe even livestream if i feel really suicidal lol *has no confidence to cg in front of people*

thanks~

Hakashi-Arakawa In reply to len-yan [2011-02-28 14:23:45 +0000 UTC]

len-yan In reply to Hakashi-Arakawa [2011-02-28 14:41:21 +0000 UTC]

l have a question

do you flatten your gray scale picture before coloring to eliminate the opacity or is it kept on its own layer with a separate gray background?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

len-yan In reply to Meteor-Panda [2011-02-28 05:26:00 +0000 UTC]

sometimes i keep the bg on separate layers if i need to create a work with an optional no bg version (this happened with a commissioned work before). normally i flatten it all though.
