A lithe boy races down bare forest paths. In a burst of icy scattering leaves he leaps into a spinning snarl of wolves. The startled wolf-pack gives back. A little moon breaks through clouds and helps the boy to glance over the bleak fire-glade. He swoops to pluck an unharmed infant from the cold stone, on which the village's unwanted infants are exposed to the night. The wolves still eye the boy from the shadows and then, one by one, they return. Some instinct tells the pack that the boy must now drop the babe to wield his sword. After a swift prayer the boy hears his answer: "Do as the wolf's teeth would do..." and he deftly seizes the infant's swaddling cloth in his own firm young teeth. He then throws his free hands back to his sword-hilt, lifts his trusty blade and sidesteps in the same instant. The silent throat-leap of the lead wolf is met with a swinging crescent of silver, cutting the spine of the vile beast open from tail to snout. In an instant the wolf-pack turns tail and melts into the night. The chilled babe wakes and wriggles feebly. The rescuer would smile if he could - his future king is safe.

My impression is that the small figure is a would be warrior. He's on a (magical?) quest to
discover his destiny. And now he has come to himself. He's literally "larger than life". He is
not only great in the sense of winning battles and leading men, but he is great in size. Or is this
just the revealed image of his inner self? The wolves are barring the way forward. He cannot
go further than this revelation. In effect, this is what he was seeking. The native tribes of
North America have a tradition of fasting in a sweat lodge or out in the open to bring forth
visions of the individual's true nature and fate.

I love the mix of cool tons with the warmer tones upon the knight and wolves.Though honestly my favorite part is probably the clothing, especially the taller figures collar.
Here's my offering of a story:
The man was a proud knight that sought to live his last days away from the kingdom, but destiny would call him to once again serve the land. A boy was born to the woman he always loved, a bastard, but he stayed with her to keep her honor. Then a seer came and declared the boy would bring ruin to the land. The villagers sought to kill the child so his mother asked the Knight to take her son to a far off land where he could grow up. The Knight had to pass through the Dark Forest and once deep within it he came upon the Blighted Hollow where a form of mist rose high above the trees and showed him the future. The boy grown and powerful, every bit the terror the seer had prophesied he would become. The dark hounds came from the trees and snarled at the Knight in warning, but he stood proud and decided to give the infant a chance rather than believe in words that had yet to come true.

a young man feels the pull of the forest
he decides to leave his village despite all the warnings of the elders
he somehow knows his destiny is beyond the village limits
after getting thoroughly lost and many adventures helping or rescuing various people he meets
he enters the darkest part of the forest where he is greeted by snarling beasts under the control of his future self
it turns out he has been called by himself travelling back in time as a dark mage
trying to share with him knowledge about the future and the path chosen by that particular version of himself
would he make the same choices again if he had the benefit of full hindsight

oh man this is absolutely incredible. I love this. The atmosphere is phenomenal, and the colors you've used to contrast between the larger figure and the smaller ones are amazing; it makes such an impact.
