Hello friends and watchers!
I'm a blogger now!
As a freelance illustrator, I'm often asked the details of my job. I have decided to create a blog and start answering the most frequently asked questions.
My very first post is answering the questions: how do I set a price for an illustration and what is a fair price. Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this questions, because A LOT depends on the details of the specific commission. However, I'm doing my best to explain my point of view.
If you're building your own price list or looking for an artist to send your enquiry, this post may be helpful.
All the best,
Marlena

I have questions. How do you give people coins for the art, and how do you earn coins. Also how to set a price on your art? You should do a tutorial over alm of it. Thank you, it would be so helpful.

Howver, colormymemory wrote an awesome guide answering your questions
RE: How to use dA's point Commission Widget?RE: How to use deviantART point Commission Widget?Β
here'sΒ the overview from what I've learned from using it myself for taking on Art Commissions.Β
Basically: if you use the Point Commission widget, you can withdraw the points as real life earnings money that you can send / withdraw to Paypal or receive via Check in the mail, however there is a two week waiting period for your payment to be process. Every 100 points = $1 when sent to the Point Commission Widget. The Commission Widget is the ONLY way you can have deviantART points convert to real life money.
Any points sent to you via any other widget or gift option are non-applicable, only points sent via the Commission Widget can be converted into real earnings.

I didn't really understand, what does eur(?) = In USD? Anyways I usually take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to finish a full image, and I charge about 1000 (10$) for a fully finished painting, is that enough? I rarely ever get commissions and I'm starting to think I charge too much.

You can check the current exchange rate online. I'm based in Poland, so it'sbetter for me to charge my clients in euro instead of dollars.
If you charge 10$ for 30-60 mins of work, then (in my opinion) you're charging too much, especially as hobbyist artist. Ask yourself how much would you earn in hour while working in a restaurant or in office.
Also, you should not expect many commissions at the beginning of your art journey. You can get easily discouraged this way. Tray to find commissions on da forum.

i'd based the price off of minimum wage where i live, which i think is about 10$ an hour? 10$ is for the painted pieces which can take anywhere from 2 - 3 hours, i don't get commissioned for those very often though, a flat colored full piece would be more like 4$ - 6$ depending on character complexity, those are the ones that take 30 - 60 minutes.
idk if i'd say i'm at the beginning of my journey considering i've been drawing for about 11 years and taking commissions for about 5 years- last year i got a huge wave of comms but so far i've only gotten maybe 8 - 10 this year? that was closer to the beginning of the year though. anyways thanks for the tips.

It could also be a question of marketing and publicity. I think your art style is definitely worth at least $10, probably at least a bit more, but it could be more a question of getting some momentum. If you're not yet selling commissions, then I think it might be good to maintain about that price until you really get the ball rolling, when it might become necessary for you to increase it.
I'm not the poster obviously. Just saw your comment, took a look at your art, and wanted to see if I can help.
