The first time I used Gimp I thought that it was an horrible program and left it behind.
One day I told a friend my opinion about the program and he said that I was wrong and that it was possible to do the same photoshop stuff with Gimp.
I didn´t believe him, but I tried the program again to see if he was right. And he was. Well, partly.
Obviously Photoshop has much more resources, which allow you to draw more complex pictures, but Gimp is enough for me to make my usual cell shadings and other things.
What is surprising in this story is that my friend is not an artist. At that time, he was nothing but trying to use Gimp to edit some images for a College work, I guess. Well, he gave me a good advice anyway. Now I have fun with a much smaller program easily found in any download pages.
He doesn´t know it but he helped me a lot. I´ll thank him when we meet again someday.

Olá pessoas!
A primeira impressão que tive do Gimp foi de que era um programa terrível, então eu o abandonei.
Um dia eu disse a um amigo a minha opinião a respeito do programa e ele discordou. Disse que tudo que dava pra fazer no Photoshop dava pra fazer no Gimp. Eu discordei, mas decidi testar denovo pra ver se ele tava certo. E ele estava. Bem, em parte.
Obviamente o photoshop tem muito mais recursos, que permitem desenhos mais complexos, mas o Gimp é suficiente para mim. É suficiente para eu fazer meus cell shadings e outras coisas.
O mais legal dessa historia é que ele nem é desenhista. Ele tava testando o Gimp só pra concluir um trabalho da faculdade, que tinha umas imagens a serem editadas. Bom, ele me deu um bom conselho, de qualquer forma. Agora eu me divirto com um programa bem menor, facilmente encontravel em qualquer pagina de download. Quando eu encontra-lo de novo, vou agradece-lo.

Tbm jÁ TESTEI O GIMP MAS BEM SUPERFICIALMENTE..... acho a interface dele bem dificil se comparada a versão cs do ps.....
mas vendo seus ultimos trabalhos até me animei a testar o gimp de novo.....
se bem que não sei se vou me adaptar pq uso muitas ferramentas especificas do ps.... até umas q umas meio inuteis ou usadas mais em fotos como filtros, calibração de cores, warp, liquify... chanels, pach tool... sem falar nos atalhos......

cute, kinda reminds me of Street Fighter and Final Fight combined (oh wait . . . xD).
I'm a GIMP user myself and I'm a little more used to it than PS to be honest (since I had it for a while before I ultimately lost it xwx).
Any tips on how I can make my lineart a little more smooth and not so blurry like yours?

PS is a lot easier than Gimp, but once you figure how to work with it, you feel almost no difference, if you want to use simple coloring techniques like cellshading.
These are the steps I follow to prepare the lines for coloring:
1 - scan the inked drawing in grayscale
2 - use levels to make almost pure white and black, but keeping the lines "soft", with some gray pixels in the line borders.
3 - put the layer in multiply mode.
4 - double the layer.
5 - use the levels again to make the lower layer totally pure white and black, with totally "hard" lines.
6 - put the drawing in RGB mode.
7 - make all the colorization in the lower level, and additional levels if you want, keeping the upper level untouched.
Although there are many steps, it´s easy and fast to do. I´ll probably make a tutorial someday. If you still have doubts about it just send me a note. =]

I'll definitely recommend GIMP to anyone who is keen on trying Photoshop in the long run - they are rather similar only GIMP is a little more "basic"; but still very useful to use before moving on up to Adobe's products. Likewise with Open Canvas

I agree, Gimp is more basic than PS. It´s possible to do nice stuff with it, so it´s a good idea to try it before going to PS and other adobe´s programs.

O GIMP tipo vetoriza a lineart? Ou tu desenha direto a lineart no GIMP?
To procurando um substituto pro Inkscape nessa parte, ele dá pau com frequência e ignora meu tablet completamente.

O Gimp faz um tipo de vetorização. Tem uma "pen tool" (ferramenta de curvas) na área de ferramentas, é com ela que dá pra "vetorizar" as linhas. Se bem que não é vetor de verdade, pois o traço final é formado por pixels. Mas dá pra simular traço de pincel, tipo nos outros editores de imagem, basta configurar a opção "dinamica de pincel" antes de usar a "pen tool". (se tiver duvidas nisso, basta me perguntar via note 
Neste desenho eu fiz as linhas com caneta nanquim uni pin. Já escaneei com a lineart feita. Só precisei adicionar as cores mesmo. O Gimp aceita tablet tambem, mas com a minha ele ignora o sensor de pressão.
O Gimp pra windows também trava muito, e esse é o unico ponto negativo do programa, na minha opinião. É bom ficar sempre salvando o desenho, pra evitar perder os trabalhos. Já a versão do Linux nunca travou comigo.

It's good for being free, I guess. Never used it myself, but a friend tried to convince me to before. Then again, I am lost when it comes to digital art. I'd probably like to learn digital for the coloring more than for the line work.
