If you look closely, you can see that they were just two faces of the same coin. Danny was the example of what would happen if you get ghost powers BUT you are loved by so many. While poor Vlad is an example of what would happen if you get ghost powers but can’t find love even if you look hard enough. And in any way I can see Vlad as a Mentor for Danny, not a very good one, because you know, he is evil, but more of an example, teaching Danny what he was able to do if he worked his powers. So in conclusion, Vlad was a non-required Mentor, but still a Mentor.
