Description SCULPTURE TUTORIAL - part 6

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
HAIR

All that is left to do is hair. The procedure depends greatly on the chosen hairstyle. The easiest haircut to do is short slicked hair. You can see different hair styles on the three photos on upper left.

Begin by making a flat chunk of clay and attaching it to the head - be careful not to smudge the color onto the skin, especially if the hair is dark. Then proceed with making lines in the clay in the direction of it's growth. It is best to use some smooth tool which in turn create smooth surfaces and gives the hair nice shine.

The hairline shouldn't be too straight. Draw some hair forth and push other a little back to make the rim slightly uneven. (see the upper right photo)

A PAUSE

When this is done I find it beneficial to leave the head on a shelf and return to it the next day because one regains some distance needed to objectively judge how to proceed.

I usually take some photos and compare them with the references in my computer. Then I highlight the parts that are wrong - if you have some experience with digital art you can even try to reshape the details on the photograph to see whether the change would be a step in the right direction and then proceed with the final alterations on the actual sculpture.

MAKE-UP

Once the head is finished you can use make-up to add color to the face (see the lower photos). Most important are lips but it looks good when the corners of eyes are slightly reddish also. A little bit of powder applied unevenly adds realistic tone variations to the skin. (I'm afraid this is not very well visible on the photos.)

If you apply the make-up before you add the hair it is easier but you might find later that there was something you wanted to fix (usually the size and shape of forehead) and which only became apparent after the hair was finished. However if you make the hair first then you need to be careful to keep the powder off the hair - mainly when it is black or has some other dark color.

I will update the tutorial when I come up with something else which might be useful. Also I'm pretty sure I forgot plenty of stuff - I'll add it when I remember what it was.
