You make it sound easy but I always end up just drawing the whole thing and it takes a lot NOT to color whatever I am drawing...

well think of the characters as if they are in VERY strong light, color only the areas where you are sure that will be shadows a sliver of shadow will make all the difference(neck area, skin under bangs, areas under clothing ..etcetcetc
