To be honest, I'm not sure I completely forgive him. He became rather horrible, after all. And depending on the story, he mentions how he started becoming sadistic and cruel pretty much purely out of boredom.
But...he does have the excuse that he no longer felt love for anything as a flower. And maybe the whole point was Frisk could still see a tiny bit of innocence and goodness in him, and in the end he let him bring it out rather than continued to remain evil. Kind of like how in the Genocide Route all the characters keep trying to bring out what good is left in you, and it's only when you prove you don't have anything good in you at all that Chara finds you to be just the perfect "partner".
Maybe Asriel was still clinging to the idea somewhere inside that he made the "right choice" letting himself and Chara die rather than hurting anyone all those years ago, and that's why as psychotic and sadistic as he was Chara could never use him to destroy the world.
...Anyway, forget my rambling. This is a great fanart. I'm especially fond of the sun effects with the pollen granules in the air and the shading.
