Description

Populating Mu - Paleocene (part 2)

For my second batch of Mu’s fauna (Mumian? Muumian? Muimian? Muui?) I decided to bring some vertebrates for the island. These animals are nothing but a sample of the diverse biodiversity of this place.

The Parapantolambda (Parapantolambda muensis) is probably one of the largest mammals of Mu, reaching up to 80cm high in shoulder, almost 2m long (with the tail) and weighting almost 100kg. Despite the name, the parapantolambda is a more basal lineage of pantodont than the pantolambdas. These animals were predominantely herbivores that preferred sprouts and new leaves, but also ate roots, seeds, fruits, fungi and occasional small animals. Parapantolabdas can be found almost everywhere in Mu except the deserts, but less common in denser forests.

These mammals are usually found alone, but younger individuals can form small groups. Females give birth to up to four cubs in underground dug dens.

Large and loud, the presbyoducks are, as suggested by their names, presbyornithids with shorter legs that resemble nowadays ducks. One of the more iconic presbyoducks was the bearded presbyoduck (Corythavis prima), a swan sized (1,5m high, 2,5 wingspan and 12kg) omnivore bird that can be found in swamps and grasslands of the southern portion of the island in small groups always close to the water. These animals are able to fly, but not great distances, and are good swimmers.

Both males and females have the fleshy helmet like crest, but more developed in males. Another male characteristic is the longer neck feathers, granting the name of bearded presbyoduck.

The short tailed salamander (Bicephala ambigua) is an ambystomatid salamander usually found in the eastern forests of Mu, always associated with water. These salamanders have a more cylindrical body than the flattened one observed in most urodelans, another characteristic is the short and muscular tail rich in poisonous and mucous glands, the function of this modified tail is unknown.

These salamanders are predators of small invertebrates, which are actively hunted in the leaf litter and under logs. The mating season is during the spring and the larval period extends for three months.
