In this timeline the Azolla Incident does not occur and the Earth stayed warm for a longer period of time.

(yes I’m using two clichés here, the bipedal mammal and the classic ornitholestes)

In the European dense forests during the hot Oligocene you might see different critters from our timeline, things like dinocerates, semiaquatic whales and terrestrial crocodiles are still a thing in this lush and green world.

Along the rivers and swamps of this land a different predator stalks among the reeds the birdsnatcher (Ornitholestotherium saltator). Since in this timeline the lepictidians did not go extinct when the planet got cooler, some lineages of these mammals developed bigger sizes and were able to establish in many ecosystems along Europe, North America, Asia and Africa.

The birdsnatcher measures an average of 110cm long, with the tail corresponding to half of it and weights up to 16kg. Differently from the Eocene’s lepictids, these animals developed stronger limbs for jumping and a more carnivorous focused dentition. The forelimbs are muscular and with the aid of sharp and strong claws they became an excellent tool to grasp the birdsnatcher’s main prey, as already inferred by its name. Other prey items are reptiles, mammals, insects, amphibians and rarely fish.

The hunting strategy is simple, crawling and stalking along the vegetation and jumping over anything that is unlucky enough to be chosen as a target.

Even without the Azolla, sooner or later this timeline will experience a global cooling and the lush jungles and swamps that the the birdsnatcher lives will certainly be compromised. The future for this lineage of mammals might not be the best.
