Description I am currently in the process of revamping my Theoretical Dog Genetics guide to provide more variety and accuracy. I will also be putting together a series of journals which will feature thumbnails of photographs by deviants to illustrate colors and patterns. If you would like to contribute a photograph, feel free to post a link on the announcement journal. Pictures need to be clear, in good lighting, and preferably show as much of the dog as possible.

Theoretical Dog GeneticsWhen I was a kid I can remember being confused by the logic of dog genetics presented in cartoons. When two different looking dogs had puppies, the boy puppies looked like the dad and the girl puppies looked like the mom. I can only guess that this lack of originality was an attempt to cash in on the new character's resemblance to an older character that had already won people over, but where's the fun in that? Being the animal nerd that I am, I resolved to give myself a way to design a realistic yet varied guide to prevent such blandness. Opportunity to Participate in Dog Color ReferenceI am in the process of putting together a massive dog reference project to enhance the canine genetics research I did last year As the curious person I am, it's just cool to know how things work. As a veterinary technician, recognizing colors and patterns that can affect the health of patients is a valuable skill. The more I know the better I can educate clients and the public. I would like to present my more in-depth data in two forms. Step 1. Material that I produce for my own use will consist of my own art and photographs. However, I would also like to put together a journal featuring photographs posted on dA with my best estimate of the colors they show, so the thumbnails can take people to the photographer's page. If you would like to volunteer your own photograph to be included, or found a neat one to recommend, feel free to post a link in the comments. The featured illustrations show two loci which control coat pattern. Dog 1- K Locus (brindle). Dog 2- M Locus (merle). From nose to tail: normal black pigment, chocolate (modified black), blue (diluted black), and Isabella (diluted chocolate).

Does the black dilution gene also dilute red pigment a little? Only asking as in the brindle example, blue and isabella variation seem to have a lighter red pigment than the black and chocolate variation.

Yes, the dilution gene will desaturate the red fur pigment a little.
