Description
(Edit 3: edited the description)This is Shycan, the first party member of Paper Mario Darkness in Time, as well as one of the first Paper Mario OCs I've created. He originally joined Mario to help him gather information on a mysterious creature named Alex. He later followed Mario through the adventure to protect this world from the likes of Bowser and his Koopa Troop as well as Shadow Alex. It is because of this that he's helping to collect all the Time Gears needed to restore all of time. Throughout the adventure, he has developed a relationship with a Buzzy Beetle named Shelby, a student at the Shell Village School of Archeology as well as the second party member in the game. The relationship has developed so much that he's wanting her to be safe. Soon, his motives changed, now willing to risk his life to protect Shelby.
Once the heroes obtained all the Time Gears, defeated Alex and Tori one last time, and met up with Dr. Toadley, Merlon, Samantha, and Father Clockwork at Shooting Star Summit, Shycan's past was finally revealed. Turns out, he was one of the original residents of the now-destroyed Shy Guy Kingdom. His father, Shyrus, was one of the top soldiers of the kingdom while his mother, Shyla, took care of Shycan while his father was away. His family were also originally friends with one of the scientists of the kingdom; Doctor Guy. Everyone lived a prosperous life, despite the ongoing war with the Infinity Empire. Soon, however, one of the main cities of the kingdom was destroyed by the empire, which hit Doctor Guy hard. He started experimenting with genetically-altering mushrooms that would turn regular Shy Guys into Big Guys. Astonished by this fact, Shyrus and the other soldiers, by order of the rulers, personally kicked him out.
Soon, the capital of the Shy Guy Kingdom was under attack by the Infinity Empire. Instead of just Infinity Soldiers, however, they also used strange machines known as Dreadwings. Everywhere they went there was destruction. Yet Shyrus wasn't about to give up. He fought his way past all the soldiers and machines and reached the empire's flagship. There, he fought against the queen of the empire at that time; Eva Esmeralda Infinite. It was a harsh battle, but Shyrus managed to weaken Eva and gain the upper hand. Before the battle could end, however, Shycan and Shyla entered the room, having been following Shyrus throughout the battle. It was there that Doctor Guy revealed himself as the new head scientist of the Infinity Empire and the one responsible for the attack. Just when he was about to kill Shycan with his blaster, his mother jumped in the way and took the hit. She was killed as a result. Shycan couldn't believe his eyes and dropped to his mother, mourning her death. Knowing that Shycan's a sitting duck here, Shyrus grabbed Shycan and got him out of the flagship.
That was the end of the Shy Guy Kingdom. Shyrus and Shycan managed to settle in an area that would later become Shy Guy Town. It was rough, but they managed to have a better life after having been taken away from their original home. This is what pushes Shycan to what he is now. His home was destroyed by the hands of Doctor Guy, so now he's hoping to make sure no one suffers the same fate at the hands of Shadow Alex.
His field ability is giving information about an area, person, or object. His battle abilities include:
Bounce (Does damage. Press the A button before hitting the enemy to bounce on it again)
Scan (Press the A button when the cursor moves in the big cursor to get information about the enemy)
Multi-Bounce (not to be confused with Mario's Multi-Bounce) (Does damage multiple times. Press the A button before hitting the enemy. Continue bounce until you miss the timing.) (Super-rank move)
Computer Bombs (Does explosive damage to all enemies. When the bomb that appears above the enemy drops down, press the button that match the button on the bomb before it hits to enemy to do more damage. Do the same for the rest of the enemies.) (Ultra-rank move)
Aided by his new friends as well as his determination from his tragic past, he now works to protect all of time from being destroyed.
Shycan, Shyrus, and Shyla belong to me. Doctor Guy, Eva Infinite, the Shy Guy Kingdom, and the Infinity Empire belong to . Everything else belong to Nintendo.

I'm a bit surprised I never commented on this before... :\
And the backstory. ;~; I just feel really bad for Shycan right now.

I told this to SliverEmperor and I'll tell this to you: The Scanner was not inspired by Dragon Ball Z.

I guess not. xD It's just, every time I see something that looks like that, that's what I think.

Goombas are getting overdone, even in the Paper Mario fandom, which is one reason why I'm going with a Shy Guy as the first party member.

Not even going to think about what that device on his head reminds us of. Nobody likes overused memes, after all...except Nevic, and he doesn't count.
Giving Shycan a computer makes a bit more sense than most examples of Tattlers; the Internet is a wonderful source of obscure information. He carries on the fine tradition of the First Partner: can analyze enemies and surroundings, specializes in jump attacks, gains a Power Bounce-like ability as an upgraded skill, and is relatively level-headed with a quirk or two. The Computer Bombs sound interesting, though; does the timing change depending on where the enemy is positioned (e.g. less time for flying or large enemies)?
Also, having read some of your later chapters, we can see that he's got his eye on a certain ally. Well, all we can say is: go get 'er, Shycan! Girls love intelligent men...er, dudes...err, Guys?

1. I think I get what you're saying, but I wan't thinking about that when designing Shycan.
2. Yup. The staple moveset for first Party Members, except with the new Computer Bombs.
Yea, you can sort of say that.
3. So you finally saw what I did, huh? Mind you, this was an accident, but I've decided to leave it on there. Adds some personality in my opinion.
Shycan: "..."

It's a nice touch. Shows that technology is improving in Mario World; and as we said before, makes a bit more sense than just looking up an enemy in a book, even when they're likely things that no log could possibly know. Remember: when in doubt, the answer is always "Internet"!
Well, that goes without saying. Notice that the First Partner always has a basic jumping attack, a tattle, a multi-hit jump attack, and a final ability that makes them unique. Unlike the Goombas, Shycan seems to have gone for maximum firepower, which is pretty sweet. Not even going to ask where all the Computer Bombs are made and launched from, though (our guess is that Shycan's mask secretly uses Protoss warp technology to teleport bombs in from distant space).
Actually, we've noticed it for a while. You're developing it quite well; very gradual hints showing their growing trust and concern for each other slowly developing into romantic feelings. Now, the only question is who's going to declare their love first...
...and exactly how many characters are going to notice and possibly mock them for their glaringly-obvious feelings. (So far, we're guessing Bowser and Shadow Alex, but Peach might notice and think it's sweet.)

1. Yup, except when he's facing a Pokemon...
2. Protoss warp technology? You do realize that I don't have the EXACT same brain as you...
3. Heh...
Bowser: "Those two? Together? Makes me sick! Blarggg!"
Shadow Alex: "... You know, sometimes you disgust me, overgrown turtle."
Me: "WHAT THE HECK!? HOW DID YOU TWO GET HERE!?"

Again, Internet. There's conspiracy buffs about everything; who says they haven't heard of parallel universes with weird creatures of elemental power? Either that, or Shycan's scanner is like Samus' Scan Visor and identifies the target's abilities based on a detailed analysis of its physiology. (That's the excuse we're using for Bristeis' ability to identify enemies in our fangame, coupled with a databank of Clawler's research on the Mushroom World.)
We're kidding. It's an obscure reference to Starcraft lore; the buildings and units summoned by Protoss commanders are actually pre-built somewhere in the galaxy, so all the Probes have to do is warp them in. Sure explains where characters find their seemingly-infinite ammunition...although where they found Protoss warp technology is a whole other can of Wigglers.
...Confound it all! Now we have a strange image of a sitcom featuring Bowser and other villains stuck in a condo together. Heads will roll after the first episode alone.

Now you know my problem: It's hard to keep my characters inside of my game (How else would you explain the Shycan vs. Doctor Guy rivalary).

Problem? We call that a feature - nothing like setting up dream matches between folks from different games or worlds! It's the entire reason for the crossover genre, and a hazard of associating with a dimensional nexus such as ourself.

I know that. It's just that it seems everytime my characters interact with Brian's characters, it turns into war. Shycan and Doctor Guy was the first to interact and, let's just say, it didn't went so good...

...Ah. Well, we can see why you're antsy about it; most of our RPs with Brian seem to degenerate into combat at some point or another. Sometimes, there's new ideas or looks into the (possible) history of his world, and when you're dedicated to chronicling things like us, that's a big plus.
It's also kind of necessary since nobody wants to do an interview with our employees for some reason.
