Autumn winds were picking up within the mountains, the foreboding onset of winter in each breeze's caress of the crisp leaves and pine needles. Animals raced to find and store food in preparation for the harsh season to come; squirrels bounced from tree to tree collecting nuts and then scampering off to hide them; birds fluttered to and fro, eating berries and fallen acorns where they could find them; even the rare bear could be sighted - if one looked hard enough - foraging for extra weight to keep them warm during the icy nights. Temperatures had already begun to descend, and soon a blanket of pristine white snow would lay heavy over the land.
Until then, however, tribesmen and women everywhere were still enjoying the late sunlight. While many were organizing things for the coming snow, just as the animals were, some preferred to enjoy the last bit of late summer warmth while they were still able.

The trip had started out as a leisurely stroll through a northern field; the land was fairly level and wide, open beneath an eggshell-blue sky. Situated beneath the foothills of the mountains, the large meadow was sheltered from harsh coldfronts and given an opportunity to flourish. Filled with lush, golden grass and dappled with copses of trees, the field saw many animals frequenting it's grounds, from white-tailed deer, who enjoyed the space in the spring to birth new fawns, to the occasional cougar coming down off the mountainside. It was a perfect place to explore, and so Alan and Derek, joined by the nomadic Miakoda and her blind Sanjar, as well as lovely Akna, ventured out, northbound, towards the glorious mountain meadow.

It was relatively quiet between the two humans and their mounts; Miakoda wasn't one for small talk, and this fact was discovered rather quickly, so both riders resolved to simply enjoy the afternoon. Akna was playful as ever, bounding alongside Derek until every now and then she'd get distracted by some cricket or strange scent, before realizing she was falling behind and racing to catch up with her fellow adventurers. Sanjar, on the other hand, was shy and slow, as per usual, only ever encouraged to go a bit faster if Mia noticed he was losing ground near the massive Dire and bouncy brown Tokotas. However, the pace was admittedly slow, as the riders reveled in the warm sunlight, the gentle breeze, the raucous calls of crows and jays in the distant pine forest. The day was shaping up to be a fine one, until Derek seemed to startle at something. "Easy, boy," Alan soothed his mount softly, but the dire refused his master's assurance and became agitated, aggressively throwing his head into the air, his nostrils flaring as he caught scent of something all but invisible to the humans. Not long after, Akna and Sanny began to make a fuss as well. "Shh, Sanny," Mia cooed, stroking the tokota's mane. "What is it?" She asked, shooting a glance up towards the higher-seated Alan. The young man looked out over the field, his eyes narrowed, scrutinizing the lay of he land. "I can't tell. Maybe we should turn back?" Just as his suggestion rolled from his lips, rustling leaves announced the fleeing presence of a lithe golden form.
A mountain lion! The tawny feline was racing from the group of large caniforms as fast as its large paws could manage, ears pinned to its skull and teeth bared in aggressive fear.
Derek and Akna immediately leaped into motion, barking and yipping as they gave chase. Miakoda was never one to back down from a challenge, so despite her blind mount's reluctance, she urged Sanjar into a gallop and raced after the others. And so, their leisurely exploring turned into a wild game of chase, and a rather difficult feat at that: bareback hunting was not the wisest of decisions, but one made by your Tokotas who absolutely must chase a cougar.
