Description Believe it or not, but this would have been the first piece of work in the ‘Native Spirits’ portfolio (if I had not run out of steam whilst working on it that is). I first started this back in Feb of 2004, when the idea for the portfolio itself had first occurred to me. It was originally much bigger than this, and depicted the young pronghorn spiritually searching, with the use of a feather, for meaning and inspiration, and the idea for the composition had come to me at a time when I had just got over a period of artist’s block. Now he is nothing more than a mere head, the artwork having been cropped down over time and thrown into the depths of the dusty drawer with no other purpose. That is, of course, until now. I came across him recently and, in a rush of motivation, decided to finally finish him off (that sounds so gangster). There wasn’t all that much to do, just the neck and background, which my scanner decided to kill during the scanning (my scanner is the gangster). So here he is, two years and a few months later… officially an experimental method piece. I’m sure I’ll find a use for him in time, perhaps as an icon for the actual printed portfolio, but until then I’m sure he’ll just be glad to see the light of day again!

If you ever get the chance, it's well worth it. There's a town right outside Yellowstone (TOURIST TRAP!!) called Cody(After Buffalo Bill Cody) that has an amazing museum. Natural history, Native American artifacts, antique firearms, you name it!

I am, yes. Oh, the rain thing is a bit of a myth if I'm honest. We have freezing temperatures and heavy snow during winter, bright, crisp days in spring, very, very hot sunny days in the summer and dry or rainy days in autumn. It's a very mixed bag! For instance, on Monday it was grey and cloudy here, Tuesday was clear, warm and sunny and today was dark and rainy. Very mixed bag.

Kinda figured it was a myth started by us Yanks. We had an effing BLIZZARD here in America's heartland. Couldn't even get out of the driveway... Lotta snow days. The worst part is that it's a wet cold, the kind that chills you to the bone. It was -11 yesterday. Not including windchill(no idea what that was, and frankly I don't wanna know)

Shit, we HAD those in Oklahoma. Not here in Kansas, thankfully, but a little too close for comfort. Thank goodness it's warming up. It's supposed to get up to 70 by next week...aaand then freaking snow again. Mother Nature, she is a fickle mistress, is she not?

Naw, I got a coat in Wyoming, fringed suede with a fake fur lining and a lot of beadwork, sorta like this, but heavier. [link]
I can't wear it now that I'm in Kansas. I sweat bullets. It gets effing COLD up north. I was at the dorms, and just walking between classes froze the lining of my nose!

Oh yeah! I forgot about how weird the sun is at the poles. Like MONTHS of sunlight followed by months of pitch darkness. Apparently it has to do with the Earth's axis being tilted or something...(is not a scientist...)

So are you ever gonna finish that "Native Spirits" portfolio?? It'd be a small tragedy if you didn't. I know I'd be the first one to buy it from you.

I really can't get over the amount of texture and detail you place in each and every one of your drawings. And your dexterity and control with pencils (of any sort) is astounding. One think that stands out in particular is the eye and the area around it, I'm really not sure why, but it was a very dark area to work with and you brought a lot of it life to it. All the reflections on the eye were definitely spot on.

I have question (yeah, another one) for you and hopefully an easy one. Well, I'm a big fan of textures, and I'm wondering how you managed to get the background like that. One thing in particular is that cool effect you made that seems to resemble a rough leather... An example of this is right above the nose.

I also noticed that this isn't a generic anthropomorphic creature (obviously) and I like how you varied it.
Take care now, and I'll always be amazed by your attention to detail... It's something that I try so hard to do but still fall far short of your abilities.

Leopreston In reply to Lupinator [2006-07-28 18:27:33 +0000 UTC]

Hopefully! I really need to get a move on with it. I would love for it to be an ongoing thing, with multiple themed portfolios under the same title. However, the Native American themed one must be done by early December (as I will need some to sell at a stall I'll be doing in the annual Christmas Market). I need to see how everything goes, but I already have another piece all sketched up and ready for painting (that of a cougar). Needless to say, I'll keep everyone posted anyway and perhaps offer some up on eBay or something.

Btw, I'm sorry for being so slow to reply to your posts Bryan. You always honour me by writing such encouraging comments!

The textures? Well, this one uses a 'salting technique' for the background texture. Basically, you get your colour paint and you water it down until it is medium thick to watery (this usually works with most types of paint, watercolour, gouache etc...) Drip some of the watered down paint onto the paper and then quickly sprinkle some salt granules onto it. The salt will then suck up some of the paint and leave a mottled effect. You have to be careful though, as too much water will swamp the salt and with too much paint nothing will happen.
