My dear Leo, I came to ask a question. How does a digital collage work?Β The image cutting is my main curiosity?
π: 0 β©: 1
leothefox In reply to EchoplexSermon [2013-11-17 01:52:37 +0000 UTC]
Well, there are a couple of ways to do it: This first is to use
the "lasso" tool and just sort of trace a line to cut around the
part you want to cut out. The other is to take the "magic wand"
tool and select all the pixels of a certain color and remove
those or remove everything but those. If, for example, you have
a photo of a hot-air balloon against a clear blue sky, you can use
the wand to select the blue of the sky and remove it, leaving
the balloon to do what you like with
It can get tricky on scanned printed items like magazine pages
since it's already composed of small dots of color

OH!Β I didn't think of folks using scanned magazine photos.Β I always thought people who do digital collaging downloaded those little packs you can find on the web of collage sheets.Β It sounds like more trouble than going the tradition route.... but I guess you could reuse images.Β Thank ya.

I do download images to use sometimes, but a lot of the
images found online are small so you won't get very good
quality. I scan a lot so I know how it'll turn out. Traditional
collage is awesome, but digital has a couple advantages:
you can re-use elements, and the cutting process is far
more forgiving. And sometimes it's nice to erase edges
and just have images sort of fade into one another.

I figured the cutting process would be the biggest pain in the ass with a mouse.Β I can cut something out with scissors with no trouble, even elaborate things, but the idea of trying with a mouse.... I would break something.

Hehe when I do trational collage I tend to use an exacto
knife or razor blade I go nuts trying to cut it right
It really isn't that hard with a mouse if you're used to it,
but I use my tablet these days

That's funny I can't use a exacto knife worth poo.Β I stick with the clunky scissors. Β You would be used to it I suppose since you do a lot of digital stuff, hmm, I'll stick with the oldschool way I guess.

I actually used the exacto knife for them back in the 90s as
well, back before I used Photoshop and such. I always
always loved collage Β

I have never even seen Photoshop in use.Β Collage is fun.Β Some people I know in galleries down here frown upon it as an art form though.

Yeah some folks hate collage, but I say to hell with them
Photoshop is pretty fun, I think Online you can find videos
of people using it, speed-painting and stuff like that

This is interesting. Took me way too long to realise the text is back to front and not some strange language, though...
Are the two figures holding hands in the original publication or is it something you fabricated?

Thank Yes, they were actually holding hands and I thought it was sweet
