Description
Kimba, the white lionHe's the bravest little guy in the land
Kimba, the white lion
Lending all his jungle friends a helping hand
Whenever we get into trouble he's the one
Who does his best to teach us right from wrong
He doesn't like for us to fight with anyone
He wants his jungle friends to get along
'Cause he's Kimba, the white lion
And he's not afraid of anything
Kimba, the white lion
He's the bravest in the jungle, he's the king
He's the king! *squawk*
Kimba, the white lion...
That's me!
Kimba, the white lion...
He's my pal!
Kimba, the white lion...

I've seen the long discussion about Kimba's sereis here.. XD
I just would like to tell my opinion.. well..
I didn't grow watching Kimba at the Tv, even if it was in my country too i had watched just few episodes, in last time i recently started to watch it..
I'm not totally agree with you on some opinion. I like the first original anime series, but i liked more the original manga. And Tezuka had to decrease some adult-theme and scenes from manga to anime.
I still had not watched the second series, because i'm waiting to dowload the second very rare dub. in my language.. we have two, a first terrible and a second not bad, but it take more or less a month for episode.
I liked the 1997 movie, and found better to put the original manga-ending rather then the happy ending of the second season, i've read even if i don't watched the series.
I'm not much agreed with you about the 1989 series.
First of all if a company decide to start a series, there is a basic-idea of the rating and the story in pre-production. Tezuka can have directed the first three episodes, but just from these one we can say that he wanted to do a more adult series, for teens rather then childs.
I agree that the episode of the Nuke-satellite it's a bit excessive, as some points in other episodes too.. but there are also other points i appreciated. Tezuka had not done just manga for childs, but also for teens, with more serious plots.
I also consider the ending pretty good.. yes, some characters died, but as in other episodes.. but that's Kimba '89, every character, every hero has his own dark sides and difficult things to face.
For the 2009 movie, i liked it, but you've not to be disappointed because it's different, it wouldn't be a sequel or something similar. Just a tribute.

Yeah I like this version more, too!
It looks more natural to the design. By the was I started to watch the original 1966 series, got through 6 episodes by now. I am watching English Dub, do you think it's all right? Because you only warned me not to watch the 1989 remake in english dub.
I really like it so far.

Well Thank you for your compliments.
I really Missed you...
I did a quick shade at the same time.
You mean the 1965 series.
Because there was also the second season made in 1966 called "Onward Leo" which stars Kimba as an adult. However being brought to the west in the early 80s the English Dubbing was hmm...so so
(Voice actors couldn't really act)
It also was much Darker compared to season 1 with important characters dying in each episode.
Adult Kimba in the second season has a darker more pessimistic character and view on humans.
And in Episode 17 "Devil Falls" Kimba was completely out of Character.
Like as if he became a coward running from what he has done.
There were two English dubs made of the 1st season (1965) Kimba.
In the 1st season where Kimba was voiced by Billie Lou Watt (A Woman BTW).
I saw that one and enjoyed it.
What amazes me is how far ahead the series was in story telling at the time.
Compare this to the Jetsons, Topcat and The Flintstones of the same era.
No wonder it left an impression on kids in the day.
Then when the series was embroiled in a court ownership dispute because the Animation Company Mushi closed down it was reintroduced to the West through Canada and was redubbed around the early 1990s. (The Canadian redub is generally seen as Inferior compared to the 1966 English dub also because each episode had some minutes cut from them).
About the English dub of the 1989 version made by Pioneer.
Seen that... Made no sense whatsoever because of sloppy editing..

I also recommend you to watch the 1997 Jungle Emperor Leo Movie that actually follows the ending of the story according to the 1950s Manga.
It's Nice... if you can look past the ending where Both Kimba/Leo and Leya died and their cubs Lune and Lukio are left as orphans.
I think it's on Youtube.
What the.... (Watches Clock) Do you get any sleep over there?

I know.
Its on Purpose.
Here I try to capture Tezuka Osamu's original Style he used in his 1965 Anime series.
I was introduced to that series a little late but I still had a blast.
Simple plots, Sometimes whimsical
From a story telling aspect that anime from 1965 still beats out most animes produced today.
And it's far superior than some of the gloomy and depressing remakes years later.

I really have to see the original series you're talking about, I have a feeling I'll love them.
That is the problem with all modern entertaiment industry for kids.
The films and cartoons are just so depressed and Infantile, and kinds are becoming like that too.
Some animated films are just too fast and lip-deep, children simply don't have the time to think, get inside the animated film. Earlier the kids shows were light-hearted and cheerful, but they made kids think and feel. Nowadays if you don't get depressed, then you'll get sugar-soppy characters without brains and heart...

Okay so maybe the shoulders are a tad to wide.
I'll correct it later.
If you want to look up Kimba this is an amazing site.
kimbawlion.com
The site has everything regarding Kimba since it's creation in 1950 and it also discusses all the Remakes all the way to Kimba 2009.
But the main subject is the 1965 Animated series.
It's a cartoon in a different more lighthearted and innocent era.
You can look up the episodes on Youtube.
It's crudely animated and the first colored TV anime ever produced predating even Speed Racer.
But the stories per episodes are quite good having deep morals.
What makes Kimba so revolutionary in the 1960s was that as a Hero was also prone to faults and bad choices.
He was not perfect but he learned from his mistakes and strive to become better..
And that was in a time when Cartoon heroes were expected to be PERFECT.
That's why Kimba appeals even today.
AVOID Please AVOID at all cost the English Dubbed version of Kimba the white lion Remake from 1989.
(the English Dub and editing made by pioneer is some of the worst I've ever seen. Literally cutting 50% of the Japanese source and making the story totally not make sense).
[link]
The 1989 remake Kimba series though better animated has NO SOUL and NO Personality whatsoever.
I am simply amazed that they even think of producing a cartoon centered around children but with the same atmosphere and tone as the Holocaust (Including pointless Genocide of animals in a couple of episodes and one episode even has a Nuclear bomb exploding... in the middle of a Jungle).
It's a kids cartoon centered around kids (animals in this case) and there is absolutely NO Humor.
Have you ever heard of Tezuka Osamu?
He Created works like Unico and Black Jack.

I see what you mean.
There are so many things involved in the creation of that series that the odds of the situation repeating itself to produce the same result is extremely remote.
It's one of the very few cases where Executive Meddling resulted in a Gem.
Tezuka aimed for a continued epic Kimba saga.
One where he starts of as cub and then matures to an adult as the series progresses.
But the American Network that partially sponsored him at the time wanted nothing of it.
Even if it's a good idea story wise it will be a hard sell because you have to look at the entire season to make sense of one episode and Americans wanted none of that.
So a compromise was made with the American audience in mind and the end result is the series.
Tezuka altered his original Manga story to better suit a western audience.
Tezuka opted for a moral centered story telling per episode.
And that's why it worked.
It is because of the way this series was put together made it appealing to the entire world.
It's one of the very few cases that West meets East and it was a success.
And that's why repeating this phenomenon will not be easy or will ever be repeated again.
Tezuka after the closing down of Mushi Production (the company that made the original Kimba series) in the early 70s was a changed man.
(Yes before the company closed down he was locked outside the gate of the company he founded... Try to lock Walt Disney out of his own studio)
His stories got more darker and gloomy after that.
So I don't think Tezuka himself was able to replicate the phenomenal storytelling in the original series.
It showed in the first 3 episodes of the ABYSMAL Kimba remake of 1989 right before he died.
There is NO Humor in that series.
An important part of the 1965 original.
Everything is DEPRESSING in a cartoon which centers around children (cubs).
And it's quite disturbing.
The Kimba 2008...
I have nothing to say about hos different everything is.

The Kimba of 2009 wasn't a bad story by itself.
In fact I enjoyed it as a movie.
My only bug with it is the name.
Kimba.
Imagine a Re imaging of another popular anime Speedracer.
Okay take that concept and put it in a Late Victorian Era where you see Speed racing a steam engined made from wrought iron MACH 0.
That's my Problem with Kimba 2009.
Don't bother with the Kimba 1989 series.
I watched it.
It starts of well and it was told that the beginning 3 episodes was directed by Tezuka.
But after his sudden and untimely death somebody else took direction of the series and it went downhill from there very hard.
So the reason why the 1989 series SUCKED from episode 10 and later is because Tezuka had nothing to do with it.
Believe me Ive seen it online.
There is no moral, no happy story.
Plots sometimes make absolutely no sense.
And half of the time I keep wondering what the fuck the script writers have been smoking to make a show geared towards children this depressing and pointless.
This is what Kimba the white Lion 1989 looked like around the later Episodes.
Imagine a Cartoon about Children with the same tone and atmosphere as the HOLOCAUST.
Kimba has no Personality by that time.
The only thing you see is him frowning.
Kitty is as Weak & Worthless as heck.
There are episodes that Highlights Genocide.
With no purpose to the story.
Bodies just pile up because it has to.
And one episode has the jungle being NUKED.
Why in God's Good Name would anybody drop a Nuclear Bomb in the middle of the jungle?
It said in the series synopsis it was a nuclear powered satellite.
But it looked like the thing had a yield of 10 to 15 Megatons.
Okay in the whole episode Kimba managed to save a baby Gorilla whose family perished because of the Nuclear accident. In the end of the episodes the Gorilla baby was safe and well inside the Jungle of Kimba.
He was playing with another baby animal only to suddenly drop dead from Acute Radiation Poisoning.
THE END
Sounds like a Fun Children show right?

not really fun at all I will admit it sounds very morbid and even sadder still is I've seen a lot of the episodes and Kimba's a big puss it had no values that the original series had positively in the setting whats you oppinion on the leo the lion series as hes an adult?

The second season you mean.
Lune and Lukio I like.
Awesome character development especially for Lune.
As the series progresses he becomes more and more independent.
Leo (Or adult Kimba) is weirdly different in the second season.
Everything that was established about Kimba's character (Like his strive for mutual understanding and peace between animal and human) is for some strange reason not found in Leo in the second season.
In fact the adult Leo doesn't really have a complex personality as his younger Kimba self and comes along to me as stiff even one tracked minded.
It may be a hint that somewhere between season 1 and season 2 Kimba was so traumatized by something the playful, cheerful and optimistic persona of Kimba gave way to the stiff, gloomy and pessimistic character of Leo but that is my theory.
In one episode Leo is totally out of character.
Episode 17 Devil falls.
He actually RAN AWAY from his responsibilities like a coward even wanting to kill himself until his son (who was looking for Leo) got into trouble..
Some of the stories are really dark.
The violence represented in this season is more graphically portrayed and dead serious (Compared to the cartoony violence of the Previous Kimba Episode)
Most stories end with the subject character (The guest character featured in that particular episode) dying.
And most of the morals from a story telling perspective are not as strong as in season 1.
Nevertheless I enjoyed the series (From Youtube) and it is Way much better from a story telling perspective than the depressive 1989 Remake.
