Change one letter in LoZ and BAM! You'll have LoL.Still, this might have prevented people from mistaking Link as Zelda.

I see... Well, actually, in the japanese version of Zelda I, the actual title was "Hyrule Fantasia" and "Legend of Zelda" was the name of the instalment. But they changed it in the US and EU versions. Also, "Zelda" sounds better than "Link" personally.

Well, if the series was originally called Legend of Link, then it would be League copying as LoZ massively predates it. As well as having the same intials isn't ripping off, look at Gears of War and God of War.

It's Legend of Zelda because Miyamoto wanted the original game's title to be "Legend of-" something, and finally settled on the name "Zelda," based off of a famous writer's wife. (Forgot who)
In this game, the character you played as did not have a name. "Link" did not officially exist. Later on, of course, a name was decided, however the title "The Legend of Zelda" was kept to avoid confusion.
