Description Tatting (shuttle or needle) is generally used today for making artistic doilies, bookmarks, and various crafts.

It had been more than 5 years since I had last did any tatting, so when I picked up my shuttle again (only found my needles the other day) I had to re-teach myself how to do it. The end result was these two sample doilies, barely the size of quarters.

Done with a nice thick thread labeled for use with crochet or knitting. I also use it for doing Fingerloop braids and other string crafts.

Pattern is a basic 5, loop/join, 5, loop, 5 (sorry I don't know the official tatting shorthand).

If you look close enough (full sized downloadable version, 2085x1065) you can really see the mistakes that I made. It was a learning experience. I'll probably post the current stretch of lace I'm making later.

Background is a terrycloth towel.

Great test run, especially after putting it down for a while.

I've never tried tatting, but my mother is learning how. I've always been a knitter.

I've picked crocheting back up since I'm cold all the time and want some afghans around the house I don't mind my dog ruining if she snags it on a claw.

I should pick tatting back up but have forgotten how to do needle tatting which is how you can get the never-ending lace done.

I'm mostly a lace knitter, myself; it's time consuming, but I love the end result.

wow, i didn't think anyone was into tatting on this site. I've been tatting off and on for 2 years. Your work after your 'time off' looks better than mine did after 8 months. LOL.. I'm a shuttle tatter at heart...

Well it's easier to get the hang of it when you use a fairly large thread to learn with. I've actually started some with real tatting thread and BOY does it go faster but is FAR less forgiving. It is pretty easy to pick out stitches with the larger thread.

If you're having trouble, maybe that's what you should do. Get some thicker thread to try out until you get the hang of it.

I have yet to give my needles a try again. The shuttles are much easier to work with on the go, even when my ball of thread keeps coming undone all the time.
