Description
Just a little doodle to express my feelings.
You see - the Association of Polish Filmmakers rejected my project for an animated short. they loved my pitching, however they said the script isn't as original as they wanted, beacuse they support only very original shorts. Telling the truth - storytelling isn't my strong point, so I've decided to learn some more about this mysterious art to me.

Fajny art. Co do tworzenia historii, na bank się tego nauczysz. Niech Twoja wyobraźnia stanie się równie nieokiełznana niczym bestia. Nie poddawaj się! Wierzę, że Ci się uda.

OMAYGOSH... those are the exact same words i kept hearing when i was attending the Writing and Directing lessons at the Comics and animation school D8 !!!
"I like it but... sounds like something seen already..."
The ironic thing is that some classmates of mine who didn't get that answer, wrote copycats of stuff that wasn't just seen already but was already existing <_<

Don't worry about it. This is probably beacuse we were growing up while watching many cartoons and animes on TV that's why we have a tendency to reference what we've already seen in our ideas. Besides it isn't easy think up something that never appeared before. That's why there are so many reboots going on these days in animation industry. Aside from Japan, beacuse Japanese filmmakers don't care about recurring motives XD

Because Japanese also understand that is not about the theme but about the style.
There is a reason why they keep pumping out so many different giant robot series: they realized that having the robots being different from eachother is enough to keep people entertained.
Just look at Gundam, unless you refer to the UC timeline, every other series is completely different from the other, the mobile suits have different abilities, different pilots, and so on and so forth, but go explain that to western publishers, do try to explain them the plot of Full Metal Panic or Sousei no Aquarion, they would probably answer "Oh but sounds like Gundam/Evangelion" because these are the only two they ever bothered to look into and probably because they HAD to due to the respective success... No, dummy, they have some similarities but guess what: Not all war machine mechas are gundams, and not all "bible" reference mechas are Evangelions (and Eva wasn't even the first of that kind anyway).
I still remember the time at lesson i had to correct my own teacher about a mecha comic explaining him that was based on the works of "Go Nagai" and he kept insisting it was based on Evangelion... and then in the next lesson he came in class and gifted me a tiny book saying "I admit, Ota was right, was indeed based on the works of Go Nagai, not Evangelion".

Exacktly! You're absolutely right. They're a nation with a dfferent approach to the art, than Europeans. In my opinion I've got a feeling that they always tried to tell some sort of a story with the visuals, unlike European artists who rather tried to capture the moment or a beauty on canvas.
I have a very little knowledge about those series with giant robots. Honestly it's hard to tell which is which to me. I can probably easily mistake Gundam robot with something else XD Except for Transformers, that is. I've been into them since my childhood so I can tell a difference But I still get your point. I agree with you that having robots different from eachother is enough to keep people entertained. Of course, as long as someone's following deeply the story, the characters, their names and characteristic elements. For someone who watches for the first time a random episode it could be hard to figure it out. It's sad, but true.
My short was going to follow a simmilar rule, but with cars instead of robots. Each character would drive a dedicated vehicle matching his personality, apperance etc. Much like pilots of the Giant Robots. Of course there still was a story and an intrigue but then I realized - not many people will get the point of having so many different cars in the short. Only the totally underground car geeks would probably appreciate such short. And telling the truth - they were a target group of my short. Besides that I also wanted to animate everything, including vehicles in 2D with classic falt cel shading (don't mistake it with modern cel shading that appears on 3D objects in many cartoons these days) to tribute an old anime style from the 80's or eventually Western cartoons that's production were commisioned in Japan.
No matter the supervisors I've decided to screw what they said. I wrote a different script with thesame theme and characters. I am satisfied with it and I will be doing this short no matter what happens. And I've got a feeling that the Internet and people like you who consider that visuals also determine the entertainment would appreciate the short, more than a thousand supervisors who have no idea about that.

Oh, right, i remember you like cars, and now that you mention about your short... it kinda reminds me of "Rimba Racer" ^.^
Is a bit of an obscure ongoing CGI furry animated show in which, indeed, every character has it's own unique and matching vehicle with it's own perks and abilities in tracks and events that somewhat remind those games like Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing. Is actually pretty cool also because at somepoint you find out there is a deeper plot involving undercover conspiracies and stuff that somewhat remind of the corruption in real sports.
If you're into cars and furries you should check it out, i mean, i'm not into cars but i'm liking it a lot and i follow every episode whenever comes out ^.^

Oh yes! I remember this show! It's been a while since it came out, but I've been postponing watcihng it, due to some of my personal reasons. But I'm still planning to do it, beacuse this show contains a lot of things that I expect for a cartoon. It has got interesting characters with different personalities, the plot seems interesting and consist of different intrigues and finally Rimba Racer follows a "character + its dedicated vehicle" theme which I've been into since my childhood. I often tended to assign a vehicle to already existing or my very own character. This interest of course evolved through years, and reached its peek with establishments and concept arts of my animated short.

I dunno if you're into using YouTube as a learning resource or not, but if you are, there's a guy called Mark Crilley that I've found really helpful. There's a lot of simple 'how to draw ___' videos, but he has some really good videos talking about various storytelling tips.

Yeah, story is a hard thing to grasp. And you very rarely find the idea that works the first time. I spent a year and went through 5 different ideas before settling on my universe's current iteration.

I know. But settnig up one's universe is one thing. Writing a script that your supervisors will approve is more difficult than you may think XD

Alternatively, you could work on the short in your spare time, and upload it to Youtube when it's done.

I could, only if I had finanicing for it. Maybe I'll start a Patreon about my short or something. Beacuse it is really a thing that I would like to do, no matter the dozens of obstacles I stumble upon before getting over it.
