Description

    The concert is long over, the lights are out, the guests and even the janitors having vacated the premises hours ago. And like a cloudy day, a pervasive, achy feeling rests upon Celeste’s mind. The concert was beautiful. Echoes of the orchestra’s music still replay in her mind, the stringed choruses interweaving in complex melodies and harmonies… and yet, this melancholy. Like something is missing, something she cannot place. Curled upon the stage underneath the one light still on, like a lizard sunbathing on a rock, Celeste ponders upon what it could be.
    Distantly, so faint at first she mistakes it for memory, Celeste feels a call. She remembers day trips to the seaside with her family when she was younger. Building sand castles, splashing her siblings with briny water, laughing at being buried beneath the sand. Collecting seashells along the beach. Discovering some flakes of mica that had washed ashore, and keeping them for a time before accidentally leaving them behind at an eatery. Warmth at these recollections and a tinkling of distant music…
    There.
    Sitting up from her reclined position, Celeste realizes, there is more to these recollections than mere memory might suggest. A song… a song of the sea, beckoning, playful, teasing her very essence with a promise. A promise of what? She isn’t sure. But it feels… like a familiar welcome.
