I'm doing a silly project for possible portfolio work to give me an interesting piece on toy box art design, obviously targeting sci-fi model kit box art and Bandai etc. Instead of taking an existing Gundam and making a bandai-style box illustration (or even creating an arbitrary Gundam design) I thought I'd make it interesting as a general illustration/character/vehicle/environment piece too.So I'm taking Darth Maul (purely as a character design, not Sith Lord) and transposing him to the Gundam Universal Century Universe and making him a mobile suit design.
I started with redesigning Darth Maul first and this is just the first headshot of him in his cockpit.
The focus of this is mainly on him being recognisable as Darth Maul and also pushing the rendering to my limit at this time. I discovered I need to study more to push past this limit and so I left it for a while to study more!
It will be used on the box art, usually they may include a character head shot on the side of the box with some details on the character and their mobile suit.
