Description Second Part: With you (Leon/Claire) - Part 02

***

Claire listened to him, even though he kept quiet and said only the bare necessities. It was amazing enough that he told her about his mission, after all, it was all top secret information that she was not allowed to hear as a civilian.

Leon trusted her and she would not exploit this trust in any way, even if he told things that would certainly have been interesting for TerraSafe. But at that moment her work was not in the foreground.
Being there for him was all she wanted here and now to take a little away from the pain.
She wished she could do more.

All the burden, all the suffering that he had learned that his soul was burdening, he was carrying because of her, to protect her and Sherry. If she had only known what he would suffer, she would have stayed, would have fought at his side to relieve him of part of the burden. She never would have let him sell himself and his soul.

While she could live a relatively normal life, choosing herself, what dangers she was exposing herself to, he had no choice. And all because he wanted to protect her.

Tears burned in her eyes as he continued to speak, holding her hand. Every now and then he pressed her hand and smiled weakly, while her smile was getting harder and harder to return.

"Claire..." Worried, he looked at her face and took her out of her heavy thoughts.

"Yeah?" She blinked.

He pulled his hand away tensely, "I shouldn’t have come, I..."

"No, Leon," she exclaimed, startled, as he tried to rise.

She could feel that he was pulling back, shutting her out of everything, and as much as his pain took her away. She could not and did not want to leave him alone, not again, that was the least she could do.

"It was a stupid idea to come here, I shouldn’t tell you all this. I’m just incriminating you, not to mention betraying state secrets. What was I thinking." He drove his hand through his hair.

Horrified, she watched him rise from his chair.

In her mind’s eye, she already saw him take his bag and leave her apartment. How the door behind him shot and would slam a door that might stay closed forever. The feeling that his decision to go now would become something final suddenly spread in her.

No, it couldn’t be.
Not today.
Not now.

She couldn’t let him go, she couldn’t risk him closing that door behind him forever. She had made a promise, not just to him, but to herself.
She wanted to be there for him when he needed her, but secretly, she realized, she also needed him in her life. Even if it was just moments. Leon had become a part of her life when he stumbled into her life that fateful night. The young rookie, much too attractive, who had a funny one-liner on his lips all the time and had made her heart trip more than once that night. Whose protective instinct was huge and whose heart was in the right place, who didn’t deserve what happened to him.

Without thinking about it, she circled the kitchen counter and gently but firmly pushed him back onto the bar stool.

"It would only be stupid if you left now." Her voice did not have the firmness she would have wished for, but it sounded honest and his gaze spoke a clear language. He didn’t want to leave.

"Because I couldn’t bear to know you were out there alone with your pain and your memories. I need to know that you’re safe, that you’re okay," she added, giving more price than she’d wanted.

With a heavy sigh, he wrapped his arms around her hips and pulled her towards him between his legs. His gaze was looking for hers, and there was so much warmth in it when he started to speak: "You were my anchor. When I was about to give up, it was the thought of you that gave me the strength to continue."

Claire gasped, half laughing, half crying.

"I need you, Claire."

Exhausted and grateful, he snuggled his head to her shoulder as her thoughts circled the craziest circles.

Her fingers ran through his long, still slightly damp hair, holding his head in place while a silent tear ran down her cheek. Could he feel her fingers tremble? She didn’t know, but she didn’t care. I need you, echoing in her as she closed her eyes and tried to calm her treacherous heart.
