Yeah, sadly, here in the US cartoons are still seen as a "child only medium" and that somehow children/teens can't be anything but straight.
Which is sad because in Japan, they just had a cartoon which was two pairs of girls doing nothing but kiss each other.

One of the funniest items with the Sailor Moon "censorship" was that they said "oh we couldn't possibly have women lovers fighting for the greater good" so they made them cousins, but didn't get all the scenes and innuendo's so they ended up turning them into incestious cousins. Like that was so much better.
Then again there's also not-so-subtle racisms. After about 4 centuries there was a hint of aborigonal royalty with Pocahontas and about 2 years ago saying there could be "colored" princess of Tiana.
Though with a lot of animes and manga in their origional formats, aren't they a lot more ..... progressive then what is shown in North America. Seems a bit curious considering how structured the society is.
