I did this rather large drawing in felt tip pen in 1980. This was just after the Voyager encounters with Jupiter's moon Europa. It was discovered that Europa might have a ocean of liquid water beneath its icy surface. This picture was my interpretation of a manned mission to Europa. A drilling rig has just struck water deep beneath the surface. Alas such a mission is even further away in the future today than it appeared it might be almost 30 years ago.

The Milky Way was stippled in white ink. All of the stars are in their actual positions and luminosity. Jupiter is seen against the constellation Taurus. I hope the suits are well protected. The radiation levels on the surface of Europa facing Jupiter are lethal.

This is brilliant, I hope that we send probes to explore Europa Β someday.

THANX.

NASA has a couple of paper projects for the exploration of Europa. Neither have yet been funded.

Build a 10m thick ice dome. Or burrow 10 meters down. That should help.

One would have to assume so. I drew this when the Voyager flybys of Europa were still fresh news. Today it is understood that of the Galilean moons only Callisto would be safe to walk on with today's technology.

Reminds me of the old 50's pictures of the future in space.

In the 50's there was a series of articles in "Collier's Magazine" written by Werner Von Braun.
These set the stage for all subsequent depictions of space exploration.

Hi praise indeed. I was more influenced by Robert McCall.
