Description
This artwork appears to be a radical departure from all of the other pieces that I have posted on DA. It is a complete repaint based on an ink and pencil drawing that I originally created in 1980. At the time I had been inspired by the works of Chris Foss, Robert McCall and various other aviation/astronautic artists. The aircraft was meant to be futuristic. Note, that there are no air intakes. This is a rocket propelled vehicle. There is also no apparent undercarriage, implying some sort of mag-lev launch system. There are also a number of doohickeys on the airframe that I made no attempt to explain.
At an SF convention in 1981 I predicted that the USA would be involved in a ground war in the Middle East over OIL before the end of the 20th Century. At that time the year 2000 still seemed a long way off. I shouldn't have been surprised when my prediction came true less than 9 years later. I watched the aerial combat during the Desert Storm phase of the First Iraq War intently in 1991.
This tableau of making the rubble bounce in the desert has become a sadly familiar theme. It happened in Iraq again in 2003. It is happening in Syria in 2017. Consider this scene to depict yet another conflict that has yet to happen in as yet undefined future.
BTW: I originally gave the aircraft RAF roundels as attribute to the artist Chris Foss who is British. Tallyho!
