Description More of my astronomical and space travel art can be seen in my DA "Space Art" gallery:

This is a card in a series I have done that is inspired by "classic" space ships and scenarios from science fiction television and movies. Frank Herbert's "Dune" universe is one of the most compelling scenarios in the history of science fiction. Here I was inspired by documentary footage of the crash of the Hindenberg to show the effect on people of a sudden and huge calamity. As Arakis sandworms go, this wasn't even a big one.

Actually this thing doesn't look like Neither World sand worms as much as the shrimp cocktail hands that grab the dinner guests faces.

I sketched this card while sitting next to Kevin J. Anderson on a discussion panel at an SF convention last month.

It is interesting the way you have portrayed Sha'i Halude. In most images of these giant denizens of the desert, there are three jaws. Here, we see four. I am not so sure that I like your version better. Also, the way you did the scales and overall shape of the monster is quite interesting, to say the least. Well done, Ranger.

I deliberately gave this worm a different radial symmetry just to make it look distinct. I do not recall whether Herbert actually described the number or articulation of the jaws or if the three petal arrangement was invented by artists or for the David Lynch movie.

I miss worded my last message, my Good Fellow. What I meant to type was "I am not so sure but I like your version better." (Senior moment # 4,234,754,821.) A four mandible mouth would have not only more dexterity, but also a greater range of opening. I think you are correct in saying nobody really knows the number of jaws the giant sand worms of Arrakis have. It would seem, if memory serves me correctly, that the original book cover artwork was the basis for depicting the appearance of these monsters. I think that the worms were featured on only one of the books, but I cannot remember which one. I do know that, in the picture, the animal appeared to have three jaws. My recollection of that is very foggy, because it was a long time ago that I had privy to the tomes in question. However, after seeing your interpretation, I think they should have looked somewhat like that one of yours.
