This is actually TWO "separtated at birth" scenarios rather than one. When I drew the WIP sketch I left a place blank for another character. After weeks of ruminating I realized that the natural counterpart to Abba the Viking was another rooten-tooten redhead from the Disney archives.

Here we have a litter of redheads who are also known for their pigtails.

Left to right they are:

Wendy the logo girl (TM) Wendy's Hamburgers Inc.
Abba the Viking created by Rene' Goscinny
Pippi Longstocking created by Astrid Lind
Sluefoot Sue from the Pecos Bill stories (c) Disney
Anne Shirley (Anne of Green Gables) created by L.M. Montgomery, Akage no Ann (c) Nihon Animation

You're welcome. I think of Pippi Longstocking as an adventure hero like Tintin.

I had completely forgotten the fact that Pippi is a little Wonder Woman. I recalled her adventures in the South Seas and elsewhere.

Wells, I CERTAINLY see where you're coming from, such similarities in design~. Always a big fan of animated Wendy~. And, I keep seeing great stuff of Pippi across the net, I really oughtta check that movie out sometime. That's right everyone who reads this, haven't seen it, so, ya know, don't freak out, I'll be getting on that. I really like you're style, it's wonderful as always, and a treat to see characters of such varied style side by side so you can showcase your ability to pay tribute to the source while keeping your own style.

Ok, I take it all back.
It's just that I'm doing a redhead series right now *pointz* and thus had all the red-haired girls I know at the front of my mind.

Excellent handfull of redheads! It warms my heart to see the indomitable Pippi.

(Abba the viking girl would, however, not have been created by the writer Goscinny, who died much prematurely in 1977. Possibly by Albert Uderzo, the artist of Asterix, but I'm not sure if he had so much to do with the film...

THANX

Wikipedia wasn't very helpful. The film "Asterix and the Vikings" was supposed to have been based on the original 1967 Goscinny book "Asterix and the Normans". Obviously Abba's name is a reference to the Swedish pop group which was formed in the 1970's, long after the publication of the book.

I must admit that I have seen neither, only publicity material from the film.

FeudorLaurent In reply to LEXLOTHOR [2009-07-27 16:48:41 +0000 UTC]

It's just that Asterix and Lucky Luke, both of which had stories by Goscinny, were my absolute favourites when younger, and I still remember how upset I was to hear about RenΓ© Goscinny's death. He died at 51 of a heart attack on an exercise bike, and a lot of great Franco-Belgian bandes dessinΓ©es where made writer-less...

Abba is not in the 1967 album, but was created for the movie.

I spent far too much time on this picture. I decided not to give them all the same highlights so that their hair could be distinguishable.
