Description How shocking - another Historical AU painting! This is the last of my recent trilogy of Stargate Atlantis Alternate Universe paintings. All are based on other people's prompts from Challenge communities, but all also represent genres I enjoy (Steampunk, Detective Noir & Regency).

For the Paintedspires Challenge. The Prompt was "Regency AU, a rendezvous on a balcony"
Influenced by the works of Georgette Heyer, Jane Austen & Bernard Cornwell, my original intent was - Rodney & John escape the Drawing Room, to have a friendly conversation on the balcony. While I was painting, both their expressions turned more serious. My friend ~talietha suggests that Rodney is discussing Byron's The Corsair, while I think John (the one in the uniform) is newly returned from the Peninsular War - and (to use modern terminology) is still somewhat shellshocked. I tried to suggest a little of John's isolation in the painting.

If the costumes are familiar, I based many on the 1995 Pride & Prejudice, and John's is from the ITV Sharpe series. All the background characters are also from Stargate Atlantis (some more succesful in likeness, than others!).
As always, many references from SGA used, though I'm rather pleased that I also drew various limbs unreferenced (those would be the wonky looking ones).

Thank you! It was a great prompt, and I had lots of fun trying to fit in everyone in the background (and trying to figure out what they were all doing)

Wow, this is just amazing. But at the same time kind of funny, for me at least. Just the concept of Rodney trying to be genteel...hilarious. Nice work putting Shepard in the Rifles uniform.

Thank you! The concept amused me while I was painting

I can't see Rodney ever being particularly genteel - I imagine he was only lured to the party by the prospect of arguing about the latest scientific theory in a corner with Zelenka and Sam. And Elizabeth either REALLY likes a challenge or she enjoys a lively argument among her guests

To me Rodney looks like he's about to attempt to recite poetry in front of everyone to try and impress Sam and in the process make a colossal ham out of himself.

Oh my goodness this is... magnificent, perfect! It just looks and feels so right, really I'm speachless! As soon as I saw this the only words going through my head were "oh my god Yes!"

Thank you!

I had lots of fun painting this - and also thinking about the various SGA characters if they lived in regency times

McKay and Shepard really make the picture. I don't follow the ship but I don't mind it, in fact I support the people who like it. But this piece has such a strong friendship between the two, and it makes me like the pair. So welld one, and I was John's coat x.x

Thank you! It's probably obvious from the painting - and the rest of my gallery - that they are my favourite characters from SGA

oh this made me smile! I've actually gotten a prompt from my friend to write an AU Regency SGA fanfic... and well, I wasn't sure about it until now, this has me inspired to actually do it. Thank you, this really is beautiful.

It's amazing how well some AUs work, particularly with the SGA cast. Good luck with the story.

serenade [2009-11-08 06:46:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh, my... I'm utterly speechless at how amazing this is!

Okay, I lied, because I think I'm still capable of fangirling... XD XD Firstly, I have to say that I'm both a huge fan of Stargate and of historical periods, particularly the 19th Century. When I first saw at the SG Awards site that there was an "SGA Regency" picture, I was somewhat sceptical because although it's a brilliant idea, I wasn't sure how well anyone would've been able to pull it off. Then I clicked on the link and was proven so utterly wrong...

I'm not a visual artist at all, nor do I know much about visual art aesthetics, but I was instantly drawn by the composition of your piece here. I love how there was such a distinct difference between the foreground and background colours, how it was so obviously warm and cozy inside but there was something dark and insidious going on outside. All the costumes are also very appropriate, and I'm really impressed with how you gave Caldwell the red uniform to add to the warm colours inside, and balanced it nicely with the other men's clothing. Weir's dress suits her very well, and my only qualm is that I don't get to see Sam's face. XD Absolutely love what you've done with the men--Zelenka and Beckett look so 19th Century!--and Rodney and John are amazing. I love cravats and empire dresses as it is; put SGA into them and all I can do is wibble and fangirl!! Love love LOVE the expressions on John and Rodney's faces. The green uniform works so well (and is accurate!) for John, and I can really see how he's still trying to recover from his experiences at the Peninsular War. Rodney in his costume is to die for, and I love how he's well-read and up-to-date with the latest Byron... All the detail that you've put here, in the colours, the costumes, the curtains and doors and candelabras, are simply exquisite.

You are a very talented artist, and I thank you for sharing this stunning piece with us. *going to stop herself now before she fangirls any further* XD

Wow, Thanks for the lovely long feedback

The prompt came from an art challenge. I love historical costumes, so OI had to try it!

Thank you for noticing the colour variations - it was the first time I'd intentionally played with colour, and I'm very happy with how it worked out.

Poor Sam! I wanted someone turned away, and unfortunately she was (mostly) recognisable from the back. One of these days I'd love to paint her from the front, and maybe some of the others who didn't make it into this painting.

Leyna-art In reply to glory-bean17 [2009-05-28 12:26:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I was planning to have Teyla, Ronon and Lorne standing talking together to one side (the view inside the room would have been even longer), so that it wasn't just one big group inside. Unfortunately I left them til last since I wanted to include all those characters I hadn't done before, first. I completely ran out of time to include them, before my set posting day. It was a mad scramble to finish this much .
